MSOC: Tenacious Defender Nick Couchman Commits to the Green and Gold

The UNBC Timberwolves Men's Soccer program has added another talented defender to its incoming class, announcing the commitment of Edmonton product Nick Couchman for the 2026 season.

Couchman checks in a 5'10," and primarily plays at fullback and centre back. He joins the Timberwolves after competing with Next Step Soccer and building a reputation as a reliable, hardworking defender with strong leadership qualities. In February he was called up to the Guyana U20 National Team.

"Nick is a really talented and aggressive central defender with an incredible mindset, always playing on the front foot," said TWolves head coach Steve Simonson. "He is very confident in his play but has a real interest in becoming better at every opportunity. We're super excited to have him join us and can't wait to see the player I know he will become at the U SPORTS level."

Couchman has both Canadian and Guyanese citizenship and says the welcoming environment during his visit to campus played a major role in his decision.

"The players are all nice and great to be around," said Couchman. "I feel myself benefiting and getting better at UNBC because of the amazing environment provided."

Couchman was also impressed by the connection between Simonson and his players.

"Steve is really incorporated into his players' lives and helps them in every way possible and I really value that," he said. "The team is serious on the field and always wants to improve, but they also know how to keep things fun off the field."

Couchman has earned several accolades throughout his athletic career, including Athlete of the Year honours from Grades 7 through 9, an Unsung Hero Award in Grade 10, and MVP recognition in Grade 11.

Off the field, Couchman plans to study General Business at UNBC.

For Couchman, soccer has long been more than just a sport.

"Soccer has been so consistent throughout my life," he said. "It's been my way to relax and clear my mind. Soccer is part of my life and happiness, and it's something I'll never take for granted."

UNBC Athletics is proud to welcome Nick Couchman to the UNBC Timberwolves family.
