Box Score There's a new single-season saves record holder in Canada West!
Saturday afternoon in Kelowna, UNBC first-year goalkeeper
Johanna Rathke became the new single-season saves leader in Canada West, surpassing Madison Priebe's previous record which she set with Winnipeg during the 2023 season. Rathke's 10
th save of the match helped secure her piece of history, and the talented German finished the day with 15 saves.
The opening half in Kelowna featured a heavy dose of Rathke heroics and a touch of heartbreak for the Timberwolves. Early on, the UNBC keeper turned aside dangerous efforts from Maria Georgacacos and Abigail Taneda to keep the match level. In the 11th minute, she made a brilliant one-on-one stop on Katie Scarth before smothering the rebound chance from Taneda — a sequence that brought her within five saves of the Canada West single-season record.
UNBC's first look at goal came in the 14th minute when Maddy Heal's header was handled by UBCO's Talia Gagnon.
Rathke's sixth save of the day came off a long-range strike from Anika Gross in the 20th minute, before the Timberwolves nearly found the opener at the other end.
Aimee Glasser's drive from the left side in the 25th minute beat the keeper but rang off the post, keeping things scoreless.
Rathke continued to steal the show, denying Haden Thomas on a rush down the left wing in the 29th minute, then making another highlight-reel save off Scarth in the 33rd. Her ninth stop came in the 35th minute off another attempt from Gross. Moments later though an unfortunate own goal in the 36th minute gave UBCO a 1-0 lead.
In first-half stoppage time, Rathke made history. With the ball worked across to the top of the box, UBCO's Nina Louis sent a shot toward goal — straight into the waiting arms of Rathke. That save etched her name at the very top of the Canada West single-season record book for women's soccer, wrapping up a first half that featured 10 saves – many of which were of top quality.
The Heat extended their lead in the second half despite another strong showing from
Johanna Rathke in the Timberwolves' net. In the 59th minute, Katie Scarth capitalized on a rebound after Rathke made a massive initial save off Anabelle Walker. Then, in the 66th minute, Walker was rewarded for her efforts, nodding home a cross from Haden Thomas to make it 3-0 for the home side.
Maria Georgacacos added to the tally in the 74th minute, stretching the UBCO advantage to 4-0. Still, UNBC continued to push forward, generating chances through
Keeley Read,
Aimee Glasser, and
Grace Barrett, all of whom forced the Heat keeper into second-half saves.
But the second-half moment of the match for the Timberwolves came in stoppage time. Off a perfectly placed corner kick from
Kate Rattee, local striker
Madeleine Heal found space in the box and calmly buried her first career Canada West goal — a milestone she'll never forget.
When the final whistle blew, UBCO walked away with a 4-1 win to improve to 4-5-2, while the Timberwolves fell to 0-12-1 heading into their 2025 finale on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. against the Heat.
