WSOC: Timberwolves Add Okanagan Defender Sam Filippelli to 2026 Recruiting Class

The UNBC Timberwolves Women's Soccer program has added another key piece to its 2026 recruiting class, announcing the commitment of Kelowna defender Sam Filippelli.

Filippelli joins the Timberwolves from Okanagan United FC and Okanagan Mission Secondary School, bringing experience as a dependable center back with an eye for offense when the opportunity strikes. During the 2024-25 season, she earned 15 starts, logged 1,480 minutes, and scored four goals.

Filippelli says soccer has been a constant in her life for as long as she can remember.

"I love soccer because I'm a competitive person," she said. "I really enjoy the rush of the game and enjoy succeeding in things I've been working on. I like the physicality of the game and the friends and connections I make through it."

She was drawn to UNBC because of the academic options and its unique setting. Filippelli plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Psychology while competing for the Timberwolves.

"Honestly, the campus," she said when asked what stood out most. "I've always been someone who enjoys nature and UNBC's campus is amazing for that."

Her positive experiences extended beyond the campus itself, as she quickly felt welcomed by the coaching staff and players.

"Neil is an amazing coach and every time I visit I feel like I've learned more," added Filippelli. "He's excellent at implementing the basics that you almost forget to work on, and when I started to focus on those I felt like I was improving. I also got lots of time to get to know the UNBC girls and they are amazing. They made me feel like I was a part of the team right away. They are very friendly and kind."

Head Coach Neil Sedgwick believes Filippelli's character and defensive qualities will make her a strong addition to the Timberwolves program.

"We're excited to welcome Sam to UNBC," shared Sedgwick. "She has strong football intelligence in both her attacking and defending actions as a center back. She is committed to improving and has a clear desire to develop. I see her learning curve being very strong at the U SPORTS level."

The recipient of a UNBC Merit Award, Filippelli plans to pursue a career with the RCMP following her university studies.

UNBC Athletics is proud to welcome Sam Filippelli to the Timberwolves family.
