MSOC: TWolves Earn First Point of 2026 After a Fiery Draw with UFV

Box Score Sunday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium, the UNBC Timberwolves earned their first point of the 2026 Canada West campaign, battling the visiting UFV Cascades to a fiery 1-1 draw. Hagon Kim delivered a memorable defensive performance to take home Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors, highlighted by an airborne, goal-line clearance that kept the T-Wolves in command.

The Timberwolves set an aggressive tempo right from kickoff. In the second minute, Kim swung in a dangerous corner that found Koss Nystedt, whose header sailed just over the crossbar. Ten minutes later, Simon Odenthal drove deep into the 18-yard box, nearly breaking through before a desperate UFV slide tackle disrupted the chance.

UNBC's relentless forecheck paid dividends in the 16th minute. After forcing a turnover in the Cascades' defensive third, Mehdi Bounaaja slipped a pinpoint pass from the right flank across to James Jordan. With the UFV goalkeeper rushing out, Jordan calmly slotted the ball home to give UNBC a 1-0 lead—marking his second goal in as many games to start the season.

The Timberwolves continued to pour on the pressure, testing UFV goalkeeper Matheus de Souza with another Nystedt header off a Kim cross. In the 36th minute, following a UNBC corner delivered by Trevor Scott, the Cascades launched a sudden counter-attack. UFV's striker broke in, but UNBC goalkeeper Callum Cuthbert came up with a split-save. The rebound looped high toward the open net, where UFV's Nathan Cervo directed a header on frame. In a moment of pure brilliance, Kim cleared the ball off the goal line with a stunning mid-air kick to preserve the 1-0 lead heading into the break.

UNBC maintained control early in the second half, generating a pair of close chances around the hour mark. Luis Beck anchored the backline with crucial clearances, while Cuthbert came up with a sharp stop in the 73rd minute. However, UFV found their equalizer seconds later when Ebi Igali headed home a corner kick to level the match at 1-1.

The intensity soared down the final stretch as the Timberwolves pushed for a winner. Luis Hirsch came up with a clutch stop inside the box in the 81st minute, sparking a counter-attack led by Kaiden Young. Young sprinted into open turf before being brought down hard by Igali, prompting the referee to show the UFV goalscorer a straight red card. With UFV down to 10 men, tempers flared again in the 88th minute when Cascades star Mateo Brazinha shoved a UNBC player, earning UFV a second red card and reducing the visitors to nine men.

Despite an all-out UNBC siege during three minutes of stoppage time, the Cascades held on to split the points.

The Timberwolves will return to Masich Place Stadium on Friday, September 11, to host the Trinity Western University (TWU) Spartans. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
