Box Score The UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer team faced a difficult road matchup on Saturday night, dropping a 5-0 decision to the UBC Thunderbirds at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver. Despite the heavy pressure from a strong UBC attack, goalkeeper Owen Shum stood tall in net, recording 10 saves to earn Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors.
UBC pushed forward from the opening kickoff, but Nick Couchman made a solid play on the left flank in the second minute to break up an early Thunderbird push. UBC kept the pressure on and tested Shum early, with the UNBC keeper turning away quick shots from Nicolas Nadeau and Oliver Herbert. UBC found the opening goal in the sixth minute when Brandon Momotani put the Thunderbirds on the board at 1-0.
Shum remained busy throughout the first half, making consecutive stops on Momotani, Henri Godbout, and Nadeau to keep the Timberwolves within striking distance. In the 22nd minute, UNBC started to connect passes through the midfield, with Mehdi Bounaaja working to create plays and generate looks toward the UBC goal. However, UBC added to their lead in the 28th minute when Godbout finished a feed from Luke Norman to make it 2-0. Pipeijn van der Ende made several key defensive interventions near the 18-yard box to break up Thunderbird chances, but Norman struck in the 38th minute to send UBC into the break up 3-0.
UBC opened the second half quickly, with Norman scoring his second goal of the match just under a minute in to make it 4-0. Shum denied Godbout shortly after, while UNBC pushed forward in the 56th minute to produce their best scoring chance, as Luke Graham fired a shot on target that forced a save from UBC goalkeeper Hayden Franks.
In the final 20 minutes, Luis Beck and Simon Odenthal worked hard on both ends of the pitch, tracking back defensively while trying to spark counter-attacks. Beck had a look toward goal in the 81st minute that went wide left, but UBC countered moments later with Nadeau scoring to make it 5-0. Shum capped off his night with two more solid stops in the closing minutes, turning aside bids from Adriano and Marcus Blount.
The Timberwolves now return to Prince George for their final weekend of the Canada West regular season. They will host the Victoria Vikes at Masich Place Stadium on Friday, October 23, with kickoff set for 8:00 PM.
