MSOC: TWolves and T-Birds play to a Thrilling 3-3 Draw Sunday in PG

Box Score Sunday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium, the UNBC Timberwolves (0-1-3) and UBC Thunderbirds (5-0-1) delivered an absolute thriller, battling to a 3-3 draw in high-intense men's soccer clash. The Timberwolves showcased tremendous grit and offensive firepower, with Kaiden Young taking home Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors for a relentless performance that included a highlight reel goal.

The Thunderbirds tested UNBC early, but goalkeeper Owen Shum stood tall, making a sharp initial save before shutting down a header from UBC's Max Comsia in the 11th minute. For Shum it marked his first career Canada West start in goal. The Timberwolves defense matched the physical play, highlighted by Hagon Kim, who executed a perfect sliding tackle inside the penalty area in the 19th minute to dismantle a dangerous UBC attack. Young was a menace all half, using his speed on the right wing to keep the pressure pinned on the Thunderbird defense.

UNBC's offensive hustle soon paid off. In the 26th minute, Simon Odenthal created a moment of magic. The midfielder stole the ball near midfield and went on a sensational solo run. As the UBC goalkeeper rushed out to challenge, Odenthal calmly slid the ball to the left and into the open net to score his first goal of the season, giving UNBC a 1-0 lead. Just three minutes later, Young doubled the advantage. Trevor Scott delivered a pinpoint cross, and Young elevated to smash a powerful header past the keeper, putting the Timberwolves up 2-0.

UBC answered quickly. In the 34th minute, the Thunderbirds Markus Rukavina found space at the top-left edge of the box and fired a strike to cut the deficit to 2-1. Pipeijn van der Ende did everything he could to protect the lead, executing a brilliant, clean slide tackle right beside the goal line to stop a sure equalizer. However, Rukavina found the back of the net again in the 42nd minute to tie the match. Right before the halftime whistle, van der Ende came up massive once more, clearing a dangerous ball out of the penalty box to ensure the teams entered the break locked at 2-2.

The Thunderbirds came out pressing in the second half, taking their first lead of the game in the 47th minute when Rukavina completed his hat trick to make it 3-2.

Down a goal, the Timberwolves refused to quit. Shum kept his team in it with a spectacular reaction save in the 57th minute, diving to deflect a blistering shot headed for the bottom right corner. Defensively, Kim continued to anchor the backline, stepping up for another critical clearance inside the box at the hour mark.

The Timberwolves relentless pressure finally broke the UBC defense in the 67th minute when UNBC was fouled inside the penalty area. Kim stepped up to the spot and calmly buried the penalty kick into the bottom right corner, tying the game at 3-3.

The final stretch was a frantic push for the winner. Adam Korduner used his speed to spark dangerous fast breaks, and Luis Hirsch delivered a flawless slide tackle in stoppage time to steal the ball and ignite one last rush. Ryder Rusman charged down the right wing and sent a gorgeous cross into the box that missed a finishing touch by mere inches. Shum, who finished the match with seven crucial saves, came up with one final clutch stop at the 90-minute mark to preserve the hard-fought point.

The Timberwolves will now hit the road for their next test, traveling to Abbotsford to face the UFV Cascades on Friday, September 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 PM.
