The UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer program is adding some international experience to its defensive corps, as German defender Luis Hirsch has committed to the Green and Gold.
Hailing from Baden-Baden, Germany the 18-year-old Hirsch brings versatility and a high compete level to the Timberwolves. Standing 5'9" he is capable of playing both defensive midfield and centre back, giving head coach Steve Simonson another flexible option in the middle of the pitch.
Hirsch has been playing soccer since he was five years old, developing a deep connection to the sport along the way.
"I love soccer because I have been playing it for as long as I can remember," says Hirsch. "My team has always felt like a second family to me."
That sense of family was one of the qualities that attracted Hirsch to UNBC, where he will pursue General Business studies.
"What impressed me the most was the beautiful campus and the amazing nature surrounding it," he added.
Hirsch also made a strong early impression of Simonson, appreciating the balance the veteran coach brings to the program.
"What impressed me the most about Coach Steve was his sense of humor," says Hirsch. "He made everyone feel comfortable while still being professional and passionate about the team."
Simonson believes Hirsch's competitive nature and versatility will make him an important addition to the Timberwolves.
"Luis is a tenacious defensive midfielder with a really strong engine and high compete level," claimed Simonson. "He's making great strides adjusting to our system of play and we think he'll be a strong player for us. He's also an incredibly likeable person who fits in with the chemistry of the group, having a positive impact both on and off the field."
UNBC Athletics is proud to welcome Luis to the Timberwolves community.
