MSOC Preview: UNBC Men Head to the Island for Two Big Clashes Against Victoria

The UNBC Timberwolves Men's Soccer team has jumped out to one of their best starts in program history. Steve Simonson's club is 3-1-0 through four games and currently ranks third in the ultra-competitive Pacific Division. This weekend another stiff test awaits the TWolves as they head to Victoria to battle the second-place Vikes on back-to-back nights.

The Matchups:
UNBC at Victoria (Sept. 5 – 7:15 pm)
UNBC at Victoria (Sept. 6 – 7:15 pm)

Victoria Vikes:

Record: 3-0-1 (2nd in Pacific Division)
Goals For: 8 (Tied for 3rd in Canada West)
Goals Against: 4 (6th in Canada West)
Top Goal Scorer:  Fin Tugwell (3)
Top Points Scorer: Fin Tugwell (3, 3G, 0A)
Most Saves: Callum Weir (15)

Player to Watch: Fin Tugwell

Fourth-year defender Fin Tugwell is off to a solid start for Victoria. The reigning Canada West Defensive Player of the Year has shown a strong touch offensively, contributing three of the first eight goals for Victoria on the season, while also providing steady, solid minutes defensively.

UNBC Timberwolves:

Record: 3-1-0 (3rd in Pacific Division)
Goals For: 7 (5th in Canada West)
Goals Against: 5 (Tied for 7th in Canada West)
Top Goal Scorer(s): Jamie Wildash-Chan, Josh Jordan (2)
Top Point Scorers: Wyatt Lyon (3, 0G, 3A)
Most Saves: Logan Pierce (15)

Player to Watch: Wyatt Lyon

Wyatt Lyon has emerged as one of the leading playmakers of the UNBC attack through the first two weeks of the season. The second-year product of Courtnay, B.C. has shown remarkable effectiveness defensively, and a by-product of that has allowed him to create offensively with some all-star calibre passes to his teammates who have then finished the job with goals. With two games upcoming on the Island, Lyon should have plenty of friends and family making the trip to Victoria to catch him in action which will hopefully only further add to his, and his team's motivation.

Milestone Watch:

  • With 12 points for his career, Isaac Tate now sits alone in ninth place all-time in program history.
  • Koss Nystedt recently surpassed 30 career Canada West games.
  • Adam Korduner is four games shy of 30 Canada West games.
  • Luke Graham is two games shy of 20.
  • Logan Pierce is two games shy of 20.
