Box Score Sunday afternoon in Calgary, the UNBC Timberwolves (3-4-2) battled the Mount Royal Cougars (4-1-4) to an exhilarating 3-3 draw, highlighted by a first-half offensive explosion where the two sides combined for five goals.
The Timberwolves jumped out early when a 16th-minute corner from
Jamie Wildash-Chan was redirected into the net by an MRU defender for an own goal. In the 31st,
Mark Talisuna doubled the lead with a thunderous right-footed strike from distance — his first career Canada West goal, assisted by
James Jordan.
Just two minutes later, MRU's Skyler Rogers pulled one back, but UNBC responded in style. In the 38th, Dutch defender Pipejn van der Ende showed off dazzling footwork on the left flank before cutting into the box and lofting a superb finish over the keeper's shoulder for his first Canada West marker. \
MRU answered once more in the 41st when Jonathan Walter converted a feed from Chanan Chanda, sending the teams into halftime with UNBC ahead 3-2.
From there, the Timberwolves shifted gears. Anchored by a disciplined back line and composed goalkeeping from
Logan Pierce, UNBC limited the Cougars' high-powered offense over the next 45 minutes.
But as stoppage time loomed, controversy struck. Pierce was shown a yellow card for a foul inside the box, and Chanda calmly slotted home the penalty — his sixth goal of the season — to level the match. On the ensuing play, Pierce suffered an injury that forced a lengthy delay and saw
Yanni Ntapas step in to close out the final moments, preserving the 3-3 result.
The single point keeps UNBC firmly in the playoff hunt, though the Timberwolves will feel they deserved more after such a courageous effort. They now turn their attention to a crucial home weekend against divisional rivals UFV, beginning Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Masich Place Stadium.
