Friday night in Abbotsford, the UNBC Timberwolves showcased solid defensive grit and high-paced pressure, but ultimately fell 2-0 to the host UFV Cascades. Despite the result, the Timberwolves relentless work rate was evident from start to finish, highlighted by Fia Cameron, who earned Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honours for her positive two way play.

The match opened with the Cascades testing the waters early. UFV generated a scoring chance in the opening minute, but UNBC goalkeeper Johanna Rathke was dialed in and made the immediate save. The Timberwolves quickly established their own tempo by pressing high up the pitch. In the 9th minute, Cameron put her footwork on full display, weaving past three UFV defenders to spark the UNBC attack.

The Timberwolves' backline and midfield worked in tandem to neutralize the Cascades' advances. UNBC cleared a dangerous UFV corner in the 15th minute, and shortly after, Grace Barrett made a brilliant run to meet a cross, only for the UFV goalkeeper to snatch it away at the last second. Defensively, Cameron continued to make her presence felt, shielding off multiple Cascades attackers to maintain possession. Rathke backed up the defense with back-to-back saves in the 25th minute to preserve the scoreless tie. 

UNBC offense found its rhythm as the half progressed, with both Aimee Glasser and the Timberwolves' attacking unit forcing the UFV keeper into key saves. On the left wing, Kyla Keer locked down her defensive assignment to shut down UFV cross attempts, while Kambria Mellum anchored the penalty box. However, the Cascades managed to break the deadlock in the 38th minute when Emerson Toop took the ball up the left side and scored, giving UFV a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Timberwolves came out of the break determined to find an equalizer. Cameron immediately set the tone, pushing hard offensively right from the second-half whistle. The UNBC defense also remained rock solid. Mellum executed a crucial clearance off a UFV corner in the 53rd minute, and Cameron showcased her defensive prowess with a perfectly timed slide tackle inside the penalty box near the hour mark. Alysa Leclerc added to the defensive masterclass, stepping up to strip the ball away from UFV inside the penalty area, while Maresha Manulak delivered a textbook slide tackle up the left wing to end another Cascades threat.

Rathke kept the Timberwolves' hopes alive in the 74th minute, making a sprawling, one-handed save on a UFV breakaway to clear the danger. UNBC countered and generated a quality scoring chance minutes later, but the UFV keeper was there to make the stop. The two sides battled fiercely down the stretch, with both backlines defending aggressively. The Cascades finally found an insurance marker in the 88th minute when Kyla Kerr finished off a fast break, making it 2-0. Despite the deficit, the Timberwolves continued to apply heavy pressure through three minutes of stoppage time, fighting until the very end. 

Right at the final whistle, Cameron connected perfectly on a dangerous cross and drove a header on target, but the UFV goalkeeper managed one last save to seal the result.

The Timberwolves have a quick turnaround as they conclude their road trip tomorrow, September 19, when they travel to Langley to face the Trinity Western Spartans. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
