Box Score On Friday evening at Masich Place Stadium in Prince George, the UNBC Timberwolves women's soccer team put on a gritty, heroic display in front of the energized home crowd, playing down a player for an entire half to earn a thrilling 1-1 draw against the Victoria Vikes. Goalkeeper Johanna Rathke was the star of the night, racking up 12 saves in a sensational performance to capture Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honours.
The Timberwolves came out with great intensity from the opening kickoff, pressing high before the match settled into a disciplined midfield battle. Victoria generated the first look in the 15th minute when Scarlett McNeely fired high over the crossbar. Rathke went to work shortly after, making a brilliant diving stop to her left in the 19th minute and turning aside Abby McDonald in the 35th minute to keep the clean sheet intact.
Late in the first half, UNBC nearly broke the deadlock with a rapid flurry of chances. In the 44th minute, Aimee Glasser carved through the Vikes backline to fire a dangerous strike that deflected over to Grace Barrett. Barrett forced a sharp save out of Victoria keeper Stefanie Mocnik, gathered the loose rebound, and sent another attempt just wide. Moments before the break, the contest took a dramatic turn when Fia Cameron was shown a controversial straight red card on a tackle outside the 18-yard box that appeared to have minimal contact, leaving the Timberwolves to battle with 10 players for the final 45 minutes.
Despite being down a player, UNBC held firm as Victoria swarmed out of the half. Rathke turned in an unbelievable five-minute sequence, making five consecutive stops denying Sophie Fingarson, stopping McNeely twice, turning away McDonald, and frustrating McNeely again in the 53rd minute to weather the storm.
Around the hour mark, the short-handed Timberwolves turned the momentum on its head. In the 63rd minute, Sophie Postlethwaite broke through for a shot on goal that Mocnik turned away, with Glasser's rebound attempt also being stopped by the Vikes keeper.
UNBC's relentless work rate was rewarded in the 68th minute when Sydney Casidy took down a Timberwolf to draw a yellow card and set up a free kick just outside the box. Maresha Manulak stepped up and curled a stunning strike directly into the net from distance, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and giving the 10-woman Timberwolves a 1-0 lead in the 69th minute.
Victoria answered back two minutes later when Ruby Nicholas scored to level the match at 1-1. The Vikes threw numbers forward in search of a winner, but Rathke and the UNBC defense refused to crack. Keeley Read stripped away crucial passes, while Kambria Mellum locked down the penalty area, coming up with a massive block in the 90th minute before Rathke snatched a Brianne McLeish header out of the air.
Through four tense minutes of stoppage time, the Timberwolves stood tall to secure a hard-earned point against a tough conference rival.
The Timberwolves will conclude their 2026 Canada West regular season on Sunday, October 25, when they host the UBCO Heat at Masich Place Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
