On Sunday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium in Prince George, the UNBC Timberwolves women's soccer team capped off their 2026 Canada West campaign with an electric, high-octane performance, battling the UBCO Heat to a 2-2 draw.In her final appearance wearing the green and gold, graduating defender Kambria Mellum anchored the backline for all 90 minutes with sheer grit and leadership, earning Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors in a memorable farewell.

The Timberwolves wasted zero time setting the tone in front of the home crowd. After disrupting UBCO's opening possession, UNBC pushed aggressively into the attacking third. In the third minute, Aimee Glasser delivered a pinpoint cross into the box to find Sophie Postlethwaite, who rose above the defense and hammered home a header for her first goal of the season, giving the T-Wolves an early 1-0 advantage.

UBCO responded with a barrage of set pieces, but UNBC goalkeeper Johanna Rathke was once again an immovable wall. After turning aside Nina Louis in the 10th minute, Rathke orchestrated an incredible sequence midway through the half, stopping back-to-back bids from Maria Georgacacos and Neala Peters. Maresha Manulak was relentless in stripping possession from Heat attackers, allowing Rathke to deny Georgacacos twice more in rapid succession before stopping another dangerous drive from Louis.

UNBC's relentless high press broke the game open in the 26th minute. Glasser intercepted a pass directly from the Heat goalkeeper, took space, and calmly buried a clinical strike into the bottom right corner to double the lead to 2-0.

Mellum commanded the backline with poise, shutting down Heat counter-attacks and snuffing out passing lanes through the rest of the half to send the Timberwolves into the break firmly in control.

The second half began as a fierce end-to-end clash. Rathke denied Louis again in the 56th minute, while Sicily Ramunno made a crucial tackle to thwart a Heat breakaway. In the attacking third, Abigayle Bradley sparked transition opportunities, and Manulak forced a sharp save on a curling 72nd-minute free kick. Moments later, Mellum nearly capped her senior day with a storybook moment, soaring for a header that sailed just inches over the crossbar.

UBCO pushed numbers forward in the closing stages and finally broke through in the 83rd minute when Rowan MacPherson scored to cut the deficit in half.

The Timberwolves dug deep through seven grueling minutes of stoppage time to protect the lead. Mellum and the defense repelled wave after wave of pressure, but the Heat managed to find an equalizer deep in extra time when Georgacacos converted an assist from Megan Sun to bring the score to 2-2 before the final whistle blew.

With back-to-back hard-earned draws against quality conference opponents to wrap up the weekend, the Timberwolves concluded their season on a remarkably resilient note. Led by the stellar leadership of seniors like Mellum and an energized, battle-tested young core, the future shines bright as UNBC looks ahead to 2027.
