Box Score Friday night under the lights at a lively Masich Place Stadium, the UNBC Timberwolves (0-3-0) dropped a hard fought 1-0 decision to the visiting Trinity Western Spartans (2-1-0). Despite the result, UNBC goalkeeper Johanna Rathke was spectacular, earning Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors after racking up an impressive 11 saves to keep the T-Wolves within striking distance until the final whistle.

The match began with TWU looking to dictate possession, but the Timberwolves counter-attack was dangerous early. Aimee Glasser tested TWU goalkeeper Yasmine Pahal with two quick shots on target within the opening eight minutes. 

The Spartans pushed back, earning multiple corners, but the UNBC defense held firm. Kambria Mellum came up with a massive defensive clearance in the 18th minute on a shot from Kylie Hendricks, and Rathke followed up with a brilliant diving stop on Hendricks minutes later. 

Maresha Manulak generated a quality chance for the T-Wolves in the 29th minute, but the Spartans broke through shortly after when Lianna Holz found the back of the net to give TWU a 1-0 lead.

Before the half concluded, the Timberwolves celebrated a program milestone as Caitlyn Kinnear subbed in to make her official Canada West debut.

In the second half, the Spartans came out firing, but Rathke and the UNBC backline put on a defensive clinic. Mellum added another crucial defensive block off a Danielle Cooper header in the 47th minute. Rathke then took over, tallying back-to-back saves on Mansha Sidhu before denying a Luciana Andrews header on the hour mark. Just two minutes later, Rathke electrified the home crowd with a massive diving save to keep it a one-goal game.

Sensing an opportunity to equalize, the Timberwolves pressed high up the pitch down the stretch. Manulak anchored the midfield, breaking up TWU transitions, while Mellum snuffed out a critical one-on-one Spartans breakaway in the 85th minute by clearing the ball to the touchline. 

In the dying moments, UNBC generated several close calls in the box, capped by a dangerous cross from Glasser deep in stoppage time, but a header attempt from Hannah Rickards sailed wide. When the final buzzer sounded, the TWolves were on the wrong side of a 1-0 result. 

The Timberwolves will look to bounce back and secure a result in front of their home fans on Sunday, September 13, when they host the UBC Thunderbirds at Masich Place Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
