Box Score On Friday evening in Kelowna, the UNBC Timberwolves showcased tremendous fight and resilience, battling back from a two-goal deficit before ultimately falling 3-2 to the host UBCO Heat. Maresha Manulak delivered an incredible 90-minute performance, scoring the game-tying goal to earn Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors on a night that saw two Timberwolves celebrate milestones.
The Timberwolves came out with solid energy, employing a high press that immediately put the Heat on their heels. In the second minute, UNBC forced a turnover leading to a corner kick generated by the hustle of Grace Barrett. Manulak sent the ensuing corner just wide, but the T-Wolves kept attacking. Moments later, Sophie Postlethwaite fired a shot on target that was stopped by UBCO goalkeeper Allyson Ford.
UNBC's defense was equally dialed in early, with Kambria Mellum shutting down the Heat's advances. The T-Wolves continued to generate chances, as Aimee Glasser had a dangerous shot deflected out for a corner in the 12th minute, leading to a quality strike from Manulak that forced another save from Ford.
As the half progressed, UBCO began to push back, but UNBC goalkeeper Johanna Rathke was brilliant. She scrambled to smother a loose ball in the penalty area in the 19th minute and made a spectacular diving save to her left to deny Maria Georgacacos in the 25th minute. After Postlethwaite tested Ford with another shot, Rathke came up with a massive goal-line save on a header from Katie Chan. However, the Heat managed to break the deadlock late in the half when Maria Georgacacos finished off a through ball from her sister Eleni Georgacacos in the 43rd minute, giving UBCO a 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half opened with more fireworks. Rathke made an aggressive early save by charging out to grab the ball, but the Heat were awarded a penalty kick in the 50th minute, which Megan Sun converted to extend the UBCO lead to 2-0.
Trailing by a pair, the Timberwolves refused to back down and completely flipped the momentum. Rathke kept her team in the fight with back-to-back saves on Maria and Eleni Georgacacos, setting the stage for the UNBC comeback.Â
In the 62nd minute, the Timberwolves broke through when Postlethwaite beautifully set up Glasser for a clinical tap-in marking the first career Canada West goal for Glasser in green and gold, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The UNBC pressure was relentless. In the 68th minute, Manulak battled hard to win a crucial corner kick. Just a minute later, the T-Wolves were awarded a free kick outside the penalty area, and Manulak stepped up to deliver a moment of magic. She hammered the free kick directly into the back of the net for her first career goal, completing the thrilling comeback and tying the game at 2-2.
The final ten minutes featured end to end action as both teams pressed high for a winner. Rathke came up with another clutch save on Sun in the 81st minute, and the UNBC backline stood tall against the UBCO press. Unfortunately, the Heat found a late breakthrough in the 84th minute, as Maria Georgacacos scored her second goal of the match to give UBCO the 3-2 victory.
The Timberwolves have a quick turnaround as they conclude their weekend road trip tomorrow, October 10, traveling to Kamloops to face the TRU WolfPack. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
