WSOC: Cameron Named Player of the Game, Rathke Stands Tall Under Fire in Setback to Thunderbirds

Box Score On Sunday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium, the UNBC Timberwolves fell 6-0 to the visiting UBC Thunderbirds. Despite the heavy offensive pressure, the Timberwolves fought aggressively to the very last whistle, with Fia Cameron earning Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors for her tireless, physical work on the backline. The TWolves were dressed in their pink cancer-themed kits as part of the U SPORTS Soccer for Cancer initiative.

The Thunderbirds came out firing from the opening kickoff, earning a corner in the first minute and testing UNBC goalkeeper Johanna Rathke immediately. Rathke was razor-sharp, making clutch back-to-back saves on Taiya Dennehy and Sienna Gibson within the first four minutes to keep the game scoreless. The UNBC defense was equally aggressive early on, highlighted by Sicily Ramunno, who stepped up to brilliantly strip the ball from UBC's Maddy Norman to shut down a dangerous run in the 10th minute. However, the Thunderbirds broke the deadlock in the 12th minute when Gibson scored off an assist from Jayda Thompson.

Rathke continued her heroic effort in net, robbing Norman on a dangerous shot in the 19th minute. Looking to spark the T-Wolves attack, Grace Barrett relentlessly pushed the pace, battling through UBC defenders to create an offensive push before having a promising strike blocked in the 21st minute. The Thunderbirds extended their lead in the 28th minute after earning a penalty kick, which Norman converted. Despite Rathke making another spectacular diving save moments later, Sabrina Nascimento Carreira found the back of the net in the 32nd minute to make it 3-0 for UBC heading into halftime.

The Timberwolves tightened their defensive shape coming out of the break. Barrett was a two-way force, consistently clearing the ball out of the penalty box to neutralize Thunderbird threats, while Cameron anchored the unit with disciplined, shut down defending to earn her Player of the Game nod. The UNBC offense also began to generate chances. Aimee Glasser fired a shot just wide in the 57th minute, and later forced a solid save from UBC goalkeeper Emma Sparrow in the 73rd minute. Maresha Manulak also tested Sparrow with a quality strike on target.

Despite the Timberwolves grit and pushback, the Thunderbirds managed to add to their tally. Norman scored in the 67th minute and converted a second penalty kick in the 77th minute to complete her hat trick. Rathke, who faced 20 shot attempts on the afternoon, put on a clinic down the stretch, making a string of phenomenal rapid-fire saves in the final ten minutes before Sofia Peckenpaugh scored a final goal for UBC in the 86th minute to cap the 6-0 result.

The Timberwolves will look to bounce back and hit the reset button as they head out on the road to Kelowna. They will face the UBCO Heat on Friday, October 9, with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 PM.
