Manulak Named Player of the Game as Timberwolves Fall 3-1 in Hard-Fought Battle with Vikes

Box Score

On Friday night at Centennial Stadium in Victoria, the UNBC Timberwolves showcased idefensive grit and took a second-half lead, but ultimately fell 3-1 to the host Victoria Vikes. Maresha Manulak delivered an impressive two way performance and scored a breathtaking goal, earning Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors in the process.

The Timberwolves set a physical, disciplined tone from the opening kickoff. Grace Barrett was a force in the midfield, stepping up in the 13th minute to execute a flawless slide tackle just outside the penalty box to strip the Vikes of a dangerous scoring chance. The UNBC backline, anchored by Kambria Mellum, completely stifled the Victoria attack early on, denying entry passes and forcing turnovers. When the Vikes did manage to break through, UNBC goalkeeper Johanna Rathke was perfectly positioned, making back-to-back clutch saves on Scarlett McNeely to keep the game scoreless.

Late in the first half, the Timberwolves offense came alive and nearly blew the game open. In the 44th minute, Laney Stewart settled a volley and launched a strike that rattled heavily off the crossbar. Just moments later, chaos in the penalty area off an Aimee Glasser corner kick led to Glasser ripping a shot that agonizingly hit the goal post. Manulak followed up right before the whistle with a long-range attempt that sailed just over the bar, sending the teams into halftime locked at 0-0.

The T-Wolves offensive pressure paid off immediately in the second half. In the 50th minute, Glasser fed a great pass to Manulak, who fired an absolute laser from well outside the box, burying it perfectly into the left corner to give the Timberwolves a well-deserved 1-0 lead.

Victoria ramped up the pressure in response, and Rathke answered the bell with a string of solid saves. However, the Vikes managed to find an equalizer in the 62nd minute when Sophie Fingarson finished off a corner kick delivered by Adrianna Hilton.

The Timberwolves continued to battle, with Rathke delivering a save in the 71st minute with a diving stop on Ruby Nicholas, immediately followed by the UNBC defense swarming to block the rebound attempt. Despite the heroic defensive efforts, Victoria broke the deadlock in the 76th minute on a goal from Sophie Olcen. In the 83rd minute, shortly after a yellow card was issued to UNBC's Abigayle Bradley, the Vikes were awarded a penalty kick. Ruby Nicholas converted from the spot to make it 3-1, and Victoria held on through stoppage time to secure the win.

The Timberwolves have a quick turnaround as they travel to Vancouver tomorrow, Saturday, October 17, to take on the UBC Thunderbirds. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
