Box Score Saturday night at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops, the UNBC Timberwolves women's soccer team put forth a solid defensive effort and created waves of dangerous scoring chances, but suffered a 1-0 setback to the host TRU WolfPack. Aimee Glasser set the tone with relentless attacking energy, rattling the woodwork and generating prime opportunities all match to earn Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honours.
The contest opened at a high tempo, with both teams pressing aggressively in the midfield to establish territory. TRU tested the Timberwolves early, but UNBC goalkeeper Johanna Rathke was dialed in from the outset, turning aside a strike from Hannah Dhillon in the sixth minute. UNBC quickly counter-punched as Glasser tested TRU goalkeeper Floor Ursem with a solid strike on target in the 21st minute, followed moments later by a shot from Maresha Manulak that sailed just high.
Defensively, the Timberwolves backline was disciplined and compact. Sicily Ramunno stepped up to make a vital block on an Allison Hill attempt in the 26th minute, while Rathke shut down three more TRU chances before the break denying Dhillon on back-to-back bids and making a clutch save on Makenna Ford in the 45th minute to send the game into halftime scoreless.
The Timberwolves came out with even greater attacking ambition in the second half. Kambria Mellum tested Ursem with a sharp strike in the 55th minute, and Rathke answered on the other end by denying Berea Woldeyes to keep the clean sheet intact.
Around the hour mark, UNBC seized total control of the momentum. Glasser and Grace Barrett relentlessly drove play forward, sparking an offensive surge that saw Laney Stewart fire an attempt just over the bar. The pressure culminated in the 66th minute with the Timberwolves best sequence of the afternoon. After Manulak earned a corner, Glasser unleashed a venomous strike that beat the keeper but rattled agonizingly off the post. Ramunno pounced on the rebound and forced a desperate save from Ursem, before Manulak got another shot away that was miraculously stopped by the TRU keeper to keep the game locked at 0-0.
UNBC kept pushing as Hannah Rickards fired an attempt wide in the 72nd minute and Barrett forced another save from Ursem in the 80th minute. On the defensive end, Mellum and Rickards formed a brick wall, clearing danger out of the box to neutralize WolfPack counter-attacks.
However, the deadlock was broken in the 84th minute when TRU was awarded a penalty kick following a foul in the box. Macyn Jolly stepped up to convert from the spot, giving the WolfPack a 1-0 lead.
Refusing to back down, the Timberwolves threw numbers forward in the final minutes seeking an equalizer, but were unable to beat Ursem before the final whistle blew.
The Timberwolves will look to bounce back when they return to the pitch on Friday, October 16, traveling to Vancouver Island to face the Victoria Vikes. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
