Box Score On Thursday night in Victoria, the UNBC Timberwolves ran into a tough defensive effort from the host UVic Vikes, falling 84-34 at the CARSA Performance Gym.
Despite the loss,
Hazel Phillips was a standout performer for the Timberwolves. The guard was the engine of the UNBC offense, finishing with a team-high and career-high 16 points. Abigail Becker led the Vikes with a performance of 16 points and 9 rebounds.
The game began with the Vikes jumping out to a 10-0 lead behind Avery Geddes and Becker. However, the Timberwolves showed tremendous resilience, mounting a comeback.
Aurora Cabrera got UNBC on the board with a jump shot assisted by
Claire Huang, and Phillips followed with a 3-pointer. The T-Wolves kept chipping away, getting a three from
Amrit Manak and a jumper from
Viktoriia Filatova. Late in the quarter,
Avin Jahangiri connected on back-to-back jump shots—assisted by Huang and Manak—to tie the game at 16-16. A late bucket by Geddes gave UVic a slim 18-16 advantage after ten minutes.
The second quarter proved to be the turning point, as the Vikes' offense exploded while limiting UNBC. Mimi Sigue and Makena Anderson fueled a run for the hosts, building a double-digit lead. Phillips broke the drought for UNBC with a jump shot assisted by Cabrera,
Avin Jahangiri came up with a big block on the defensive end, but the Vikes entered the halftime break with a 42-18 lead.
In the third quarter, Phillips continued to attack, earning points at the free-throw line and scoring on a strong layup.
Sophia Fuller provided a spark from beyond the arc, draining a 3-pointer. However, the Vikes continued to execute, with Anderson and Iva Kalabric hitting shots to extend their advantage to 61-28 heading into the final frame.
The Timberwolves kept fighting in the fourth. Phillips added to her total with another jump shot and a bucket inside.
Katie Shchepotkina also found the scoresheet with a late jumper. Despite the effort, the Vikes' depth proved too much, and they closed out the 84-34 victory.
The Timberwolves will look to bounce back in their next game on Saturday January 24 at Trinity Western.
