WSOC: Barrett Strikes for UNBC in a Saturday Setback to Victoria

Box Score

Saturday night in Victoria, the UNBC Timberwolves fell 4-1 to the Victoria Vikes. Four different goal scorers found the back of the net for the hosts while Grace Barrett scored her first career Canada West goal in response for the Green and Gold.

Less than 24 hours after one of their most inspired outings of the year, the UNBC Timberwolves came out with energy and purpose on Saturday. The TWolves showed composure defensively and looked dangerous on the wings, nearly striking first in the 18th minute when Kambria Mellum's free kick thundered off the crossbar. Kate Rattee was first to the rebound, but under pressure, she lifted her effort just over the target.

The Vikes responded six minutes later, capitalizing on a two-on-one when Ruby Nicholas finished off a Scarlet McNeely setup. Ten minutes later, Sophie Murphy doubled the advantage with a determined second-effort strike, sending the hosts into halftime ahead 2-0 with a 7-0 edge in shots on target.

Victoria extended the lead in the 53rd minute off a double-header sequence from a corner kick. Ruby Nicholas delivered the service, Jayden Hannesson won the initial header, and Claire Nicholas provided the final touch to make it 3-0.

UNBC found their breakthrough in the 74th minute. Mellum launched a deep ball to Aimee Glasser on the left, who flicked a perfect header into the path of Grace Barrett. The first-year forward's initial attempt was denied, but she buried the rebound for her first career Canada West goal — a milestone moment for the Kamloops product.

The joy was short-lived, however, as Victoria answered five minutes later. Raina Hagel rose to meet a Makayla Peluso free kick, nodding the ball home to restore the three-goal cushion.

Neil Sedgwick's side emptied the bench in the closing stages, giving valuable minutes to Boroka Peter, Emily Willmets, RJ Barfoot, Sophie Postelthwaite, and Sydney Ludwig. When the final whistle sounded, the Vikes had secured a 4-1 victory, finishing with a 13-3 edge in shots.

The Timberwolves (0-9-1) will return home next weekend for a doubleheader against the Trinity Western Spartans.
