Box Score Friday night in Victoria, the UNBC Timberwolves earned their first point of the Canada West season, thanks to a remarkable performance from rookie goalkeeper Johanna Rathke.
The first-year German was sensational, turning aside 13 shots — seven of them in the second half — to preserve a hard-fought 0-0 draw with the Victoria Vikes. As the clock wound down and UVic pushed numbers forward in search of a winner, Rathke stood tall, frustrating the home side at every turn.
The Vikes carried much of the play in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting UNBC 6-1 and holding a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks. Still, the Timberwolves remained composed defensively, limiting UVic to few clear-cut chances. At the other end, Kate Rattee registered the visitors' lone shot on target before halftime.
In the second half, Rattee and Madeleine Heal each tested the Vikes' keeper, but the story of the night was Rathke. She denied Alice Koop and Jayden Hennesson twice apiece, stymied Abby McDonald and Sophie Murphy and even got some help from the iron when Makayla Peluso rang a shot off the crossbar in the dying moments.
With every stop, Rathke's confidence — and that of her teammates — only grew. When the final whistle sounded, she was mobbed by her teammates, celebrating her first Canada West clean sheet and the Timberwolves' first point of the campaign.
UNBC's record moves to 0-8-1, and they'll look to build on Friday's momentum in Saturday's 5:00 pm rematch with the Vikes.
