Box Score Sunday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium, the UNBC Timberwolves Women showed signs of improvement in a 1-0 loss to the visiting TRU Wolfpack. Esi Lufo scored the lone goal in the 63rd minute, wrapping up the weekend with three goals and an assist as the Wolfpack secured a pair of wins to kickoff the season over the TWolves. At the other side,
Johanna Rathke made 10 saves, many highlight-reel-worthy, to keep the Wolfpack to the lone goal.
Early on, following up a game from Friday night that saw the Wolfpack control the ball and split the field in half in a 5-0 winning effort, the TWolves responded with flipping the script in the initial few minutes Sunday afternoon by creating a few offensive opportunities of their own.
In the 33rd minute, the TWolves lined up for a long free kick inside the offensive end of the field. With the ball coming in to the far side of the net,
RJ Barfoot was unable to get solid contact onto the ball as it rolled past just outside the opposite post.
The offensive pressure continued for the TWolves, keeping their eye on that first goal of the season. In the 42nd minute,
Fia Cameron put a hard left-footed free kick on net from 31-yards out. The ball popped loose after Wolfpack keeper Floor Ursem made the initial save, but the TWolves weren't able to capitalize as the next shot soared just outside the post.
After two minutes were added of stoppage time, the first half ended scoreless.
The Wolfpack finished the half with five shots on net, but struggled to contest TWolves keeper
Johanna Rathke. UNBC wrapped up the first half with three shots on net.
In the second half, TRU tried to hunt down a momentum shift. In the 50th minute, they hopes to capitalize. A cross from the right sideline to the top of the box saw a Wolfpack attacker alone for a scoring opportunity but Rathke closed in and brought a quick end to the attack with a sprawling save.
Approaching the 60th minute, a turnover in the UNBC end saw the Wolfpack with a quick breakaway opportunity, but once again Rathke came up with a quick response save as she challenged the attacker to make the first safe. Another shot off the ensuing rebound sailed over the crossbar as the TWolves looked to regroup.
In the 63rd minute, the Wolfpack lined up for a corner kick. With the ball being delivered to the far side of the net, Esi Lufo leaped up to connect with a header putting the ball into the net to open the scoring, putting TRU ahead 1-0. The goal was Lufo's third of the season after scoring twice in their season opener on Friday. Nat Seiz assisted on the goal.
Now with the lead, the Wolfpack showed offensive control similar to their performance earlier in the weekend, putting pressure on the TWolves defensive ball-handlers and forcing turnovers for quick attacks.
UNBC continued their attempt to create offensive opportunities, sending
Madeleine Heal in for a few scoring chances, but couldn't find an answer for the Wolfpack's back line.
After three additional minutes, the Wolfpack secured the 1-0 win to improve their record to 2-0-0 while the TWolves see their record go to 0-2-0 after the opening weekend of the Canada West season.
The TWolves will look to regroup, and build upon the improvements on Sunday in time to hit the road for the first time this Canada West season. They'll travel to the MRS Sports Complex in Abbotsford to take on the Fraser Valley Cascades on Thursday, August 28 at 5:30 pm.
