This weekend in Abbotsford, the UNBC Timberwolves (0-7) have an opportunity to make some inroads in the Pacific Division standings when they meet the UFV Cascades (2-5) for a pair of road games.
A victory or two for UNBC would vault them right back into the thick of things in the lower half of the division standings, and with 13 games still remaining in their season – there's still a good chunk of playoff leash available for this young squad to take advantage of.
A major bright spot for UNBC last weekend on the road was
Claire Huang. The third-year point guard produced 19 combined points over two games, and earned back-to-back player of the game honours for UNBC. Given some of the injuries and aversity that Huang has dealt with over the years, it was great to see her both producing and leading.
"UFV is directly above us in the standings, and we know that if we play to our identity and commit to one another, that we can put ourselves in position for success," stated Huang who'll likely have some friends and family making the trek across Highway 1 from her hometown in Vancouver to watch her play this weekend.
After several years being stapled to the top of the conference standings, the Cascades are off to an uncharacteristically slow start. The absence of perennial all-star Maddy Gobeil is a factor, no doubt, but fifth-year forward Julia Tuchscherer is as good a two-way player as you'll find in Canada West. Containing her at both ends of the floor will be a key for Sergey Shchepotkin's club.
The TWolves and Cascades begin their weekend Friday with a 6:00 pm clash, followed by a 4:00 pm rematch on Saturday afternoon.
