Box Score Friday night at the Northern Sport Centre, the UNBC Timberwolves Women (0-2) dropped the opener of their Friday-Saturday double-header with the Alberta Pandas. The final score showed 83 - 35 for Alberta. Jayden Tanner and McKinley Penninga finished the night with a team-high 11 points for Alberta while
Hazel Phillips and
Viktoriia Filatova each had nine for UNBC. Filatova also grabbed a team-high seven boards for the hosts while Mishynn Miller grabbed seven for Alberta.
The first two field goals of the day for UNBC came courtesy of Filatova who nailed a pair of early jumpers in the opening three minutes and change. Unfortunately for the TWolves that marked their lone offense of the first as the talent Pandas squad had a strong two-way start to the game. Offensive the first-quarter star was Tanner who hit twice from deep while adding two steals, a rebound and an assist. Nine different Alberta players found the scoresheet in the opening 10 minutes, which helped pace them to a 22-4 advantage after one.
The TWolves showed better on the offensive side of the ball in the second quarter, as they poured in 11 points. Six of those 11 came from rookie
Summer Toor who showed confidence and poise from beyond the arc, hitting twice from deep. The other five points came via a triple from
Hazel Phillips and another two from Filatova. Tanner added five more to her totals in the second while Mishynn Miller and Morgan Harris made their presence felt on the glass, combining for eight rebounds in the opening half.
Halfway through the game, the score showed 41-15 for Alberta with Tanner leading all scorers with 11. Filatova and Toor each had six at the half for UNBC while
Aurora Cabrera (6) and Filatova (5) had 11 rebounds combined.
Alberta outscored UNBC 16-12 in the third quarter, but again, Sergey Shchepotkin's team showed no quit. Four of the 12 third quarter points came from first-year forward
Hazel Phillips who has impressed at both ends of the floor in the early days of the season.
Sophia Fuller and
Yana Shupak also found the scoresheet in the third Q. Kira Airey responded with six points at the other side for the Pandas while Penninga hit from deep. The score through three had Alberta leading 57-27.
Alberta's biggest offensive output came in the final quarter as they outscored UNBC 26-8. True to form, the Pandas spread the ball around nicely as their two highest scorers (Tanner and Penninga) had 11 points apiece at game's end. Filatova and Phillips each had a pair of the fourth for UNBC while
Lorenn Caceres and
Aurora Cabrera found the scoresheet with two each as well.
After 40 minutes in PG, the Pandas were able to celebrate their 83-35 win. Sergey Shchepotkin's club will look to rebound tomorrow night at 5:00 pm when they once again battle the Pandas at the NSC.
