WSOC: TWolves Drop Friday Opener to UBC

Box Score Friday night at Masich Place Stadium on a crisp, fall evening in Prince George, the UNBC Timberwolves fell 7-0 to the top ranked UBC Thunderbirds. Jada Taylor-Ryan, the reigning Canada West Player of the Week supplied three goals and an assist for the 'Birds while Nisa Reehal added a pair. UNBC goalkeeper Brityn Hinsche finished the night with 15 saves while Dakota Beckett and Lita Billman combined on the clean sheet for UBC.

In the third minute, Brityn Hinsche dove to her right and made a wonderful save with her right fist off a header in close. Unfortunately, the rebound could not be cleared, and the 'Birds took a 1-0 lead on Jade Taylor-Ryan's seventh of the season.

The 2-0 goal came shortly thereafter off the boot of Holly Whelan. She ripped her fourth of the season past Hinsche who yet again made a wonderful save seconds earlier. Taya Dennehy supply the assist.

The TWolves found their footing after that. Defensively they settled into a better groove – keeping the attacking Thunderbirds to the outside.

But while things got better on the defensive side of the ball, offensively the TWolves had a tough time getting into the back-third of the 'Birds zone. As solid as the 'Birds have been offensively this season, they've been equally stingy on the back end having only surrendered three goals against through their opening 10 games.

Nisa Reehal extended UBC's lead to 3-0 in the 34th minute when her shot from the right wing off the rush snuck through Hinsche. Reehal's third of the campaign was set up by Taylor-Ryan – giving her two points on the day.

Just over four-minutes later, Taylor-Ryan secured her first-half brace when she converted off a penalty kick that came as a result of a UNBC infraction side the penalty area. Taylor-Ryan's eight of the season and second of the match made it a 4-0 UBC lead, which is how the score stayed until the halftime whistle.

Shots on target at half were 10-1 favouring UNBC.

Neil Sedgwick made two first-half substitutions, swapping in both Celeste Kirkness and Fia Cameron in place of Sidney Elliott and Camryn Cline, but to start the second half he kept the same 11 on the field that ended the first.

'Birds forward Taylor Ryan's scorching run of offense continued in the 49th minute when she tucked away her third of the match and ninth of the season off a setup from Ella Sunde.
It would have been easy for the TWolves to turn on one another and take shortcuts, but full credit to Neil Sedgwick's club who remained focused and connected against arguably the nation's top team. First-year defender Keeley Read played the entirety of Friday's match, and her competitiveness never wavered. She earned Mr. Mike's Player of the Game honours for UNBC on Friday.

With less than five minutes to go in the match, UBC struck twice more in a one-minute span thanks to goals from Reehal ('87 - her second of the night) and Bailey Doerksen ('88) which rounded out the game's scoring on Friday.

Shots on target at the end of 90 were 22-3 in favour of UBC who improved their league-leading record to 11-0. The TWolves now sit at 1-10 with one final home game remaining in their 2024 season.
Tomorrow at 6:00 pm, the TWolves once again take to the pitch against UBC and will celebrate their six upcoming graduates: Kjera Hayman, Sidney Elliott, Camryn Cline, Brityn Hinsche, Sarah Lepine and Claire Turner.
