The UNBC Timberwolves (0-1-2) battled back twice to earn a point on Friday night, drawing Trinity Western University (1-3-1) 2-2 in a back-and-forth Canada West men's Friday night clash.
Koss Nystedt and
Hagon Kim found the back of the net for UNBC, while goalkeeper
Callum Cuthbert turned aside seven shots as the Timberwolves secured their second consecutive single-point result.
Trinity Western opened the scoring in the 38th minute after Elijah Bean delivered a dangerous cross from the left side of the box. Jordan Low settled the opportunity and fired a low shot past a diving Cuthbert to give the visiting Spartans a 1-0 lead.
The goal capped a first half in which Trinity Western generated the majority of the offensive pressure, outshooting UNBC 5-1. Cuthbert helped keep the Timberwolves within striking distance, making his best stop off of Xander Roxburgh in the eighth minute.
UNBC made its lone shot of the opening half count, however, drawing level just before the break.
In the 45th minute,
Trevor Scott floated a well-weighted ball into the box from the right wing, where Nystedt timed his run perfectly and redirected the pass with a header to make it 1-1.
The Timberwolves carried some of that momentum into the second half, creating an early opportunity in the 54th minute, but a close-range header sailed over the crossbar.
Trinity Western responded three minutes later and regained the lead on its first shot on target of the second half. Romeo Strauss capitalized after a deflection off a UNBC defender sent the ball his way. Strauss then calmly finishing the chance for his first goal of the season.
The Spartans then did an effective job limiting UNBC's opportunities, with the Timberwolves showing just two shots on target through the opening 80 minutes.
UNBC continued to push as the clock wound down. Nystedt nearly equalized again in the 83rd minute, but his header from the right side drifted just over the crossbar.
The late pressure finally paid off in the 88th minute.
Kim received the ball on the left wing and sent a curling delivery into the box. The ball took a perfect bounce off the turf and redirected into the net, bringing the crowd to its feet and restoring parity at 2-2.
Kim's first goal of the season ensured the Timberwolves would leave with a point, while both sides settled for a share of the result.
UNBC will look to build on the performance as they welcome the UBC Thunderbirds to Masich Place Stadium for a 2:30 pm clash.
