MBB: TWolves Drop a Saturday Clash at UBC

Box Score On Saturday night in Vancouver, the UNBC Timberwolves closed out their 2025-26 road schedule with a high-scoring battle, falling 104-84 to the UBC Thunderbirds at War Memorial Gym. Despite the loss, Justin Sunga delivered a stellar performance for the Timberwolves, filling the stat sheet with 20 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds.

For the Thunderbirds, Nikola Guzina led the way with 21 points, while Tobi Akinkunmi added 17 points to help the hosts complete the weekend sweep.

The game opened at a frantic pace. UBC struck first with a dunk from Gus Goerzen, but UNBC quickly responded. Sunga hit a layup and a 3-pointer to get the offense rolling, and Chris Ainsley caught fire early. Ainsley drilled a 3-pointer off a Sunga assist, then converted a massive four-point play after being fouled from deep, giving UNBC an early 12-8 lead. Danilo Gonzalez added a jumper, and Ainsley hit another triple, but the Thunderbirds answered with a flurry of late buckets to take a 25-21 lead after one.

The second quarter turned into a shootout. Isaiah Bias was the catalyst for UNBC, finding Miller Davies for a layup and scoring inside himself. The teams traded 3-pointers, with Milan Pasquale and Ainsley connecting from deep for the T-Wolves. Gonzalez then went on a personal run, hitting a jumper, two free throws, and a 3-pointer to keep UNBC within striking distance at 43-38.

Sunga added a late layup and Ainsley sank three free throws, but UBC closed the half on a hot streak from beyond the arc to carry a 57-44 lead into the break.

In the third quarter Sunga tried to shoot the Timberwolves back into the game. The guard drained three 3-pointers in the frame, including two assisted by Bias and Davies. Davies provided energy with two emphatic dunks, and Tony Kibonge and Bias both connected from downtown. Despite the offensive outburst from UNBC, the Thunderbirds matched them shot for shot, maintaining their advantage heading into the fourth.

The Timberwolves continued to fight until the final buzzer. Pasquale opened the fourth with a 3-pointer, and Cairo Wells provided a spark off the bench, hitting a jumper and two 3-pointers. Cameron Lalli also found the range late with a triple assisted by Bias, and Pasquale closed the scoring with free throws. However, UBC's efficient offense proved too much to overcome as they secured the 104-84 victory.

The Timberwolves now return to Prince George for their final games of the regular season. They will host their Senior Weekend next week at the Northern Sport Centre, looking to finish the year strong in front of their home fans.
