The UNBC Timberwolves Men's Basketball squad (2-14) return to action this weekend beginning tomorrow night at 7:30 pm at War Memorial Gym down South against the UBC Thunderbirds. Todd Jordan's club will face the T-Birds twice this weekend on the road before wrapping things up next weekend at home to TRU.
On January 15
th, the TWolves and T-Birds met for the first time this season, and UBC prevailed by a 14-point margin (88-74). The duo of Nikola Guzina (19) and Edouard Gauthier (17) did the heavy lifting offensively for UBC while four TWolves (
Isaiah Bias,
Miller Davies,
Justin Sunga and
Haukur Davidsson) all answered with double-digit scoring efforts. Davies' game was especially impressive as he reached a new career-high 18 points while pulling down five rebounds.
Davies, a second-year big from Chilliwack, is averaging 5.7 points-per-game and has started all but two games for UNBC this season. His 5.6 rebounds-per-game place him second on the team.
At the other end, UBC's calling card is their depth. Guzina is their go-to threat, but three other 'Birds are averaging over 10 points-per-game.
This weekend also pits two of the very best playmakers in Canada West against one another. UBC's Holt Tomie (84) and UNBC's
Justin Sunga (82) sit fourth and fifth in conference assists, and a big weekend from either player could vault them higher up the list as Winnipeg's Kato Jaro sits first with 93.
Barring a surprising setback, the Victoria Vikes will likely finish first in the Pacific Division, but UBC (12-4) will need to continue winning  if they want to keep themselves ahead of the surging UFV Cascades (11-6).
There's never a dull moment when the TWolves and T-Birds get together, and these two final road games will provide a solid test for Todd Jordan's club who continues to show positive things on a nightly basis, even if the wins have been tough to come by as of late.
Both games this weekend can be seen live on Canada West TV.
