MBB: TWolves Drop Saturday Road Clash With TWU

Box Score On Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre, the UNBC Timberwolves  closed out their weekend road trip with a 102-65 loss to the Trinity Western Spartans (TWU).

Despite a strong start and 12 points from Chris Ainsley, the Timberwolves couldn't contain the Spartans offense, led by Tyus De Vries' 21-point performance.

The game began promisingly for UNBC as Ainsley opened the scoring with a jump shot, and Miller Davies added a layup to match the Spartans early. After falling behind 7-4, the Timberwolves rallied. Danilo Gonzalez hit free throws, and Tony Kibonge drilled a 3-pointer off an Ainsley assist to put UNBC ahead 9-8. Gonzalez connected from deep again, and then Ainsley took over, hitting a jumper and a 3-pointer—the latter set up by a Kibonge steal—to give UNBC a 17-15 advantage. Haukur Davidsson added a layup and free throws to extend the lead to 24-15, but TWU closed the quarter on a 9-2 run. Isaiah Bias hit two late free throws to give UNBC a slim 26-24 lead after ten minutes.

The second quarter saw the Spartans seize control. While Bias and Ainsley continued to score, TWU's offense found another gear. Wesley Ainu'u provided a spark for the T-Wolves, scoring three times inside to keep the game close at 41-35. Kibonge also hit a corner three to cut the deficit to three, but the Spartans ended the half on a 12-2 run, fueled by De Vries and Connor Platz, to take a 53-40 lead into the break.

The third quarter proved difficult for the Timberwolves, as the Spartans' offense continued to roll. TWU opened the half with a decisive run, extending their lead significantly. Bias broke the drought with free throws, and Cairo Wells connected on a 3-pointer late in the frame. Milan Pasquale added a jumper, and Marcus Nickles hit a triple in the final seconds, but UNBC trailed 79-50 heading into the fourth.

Despite the deficit, the Timberwolves continued to battle in the final quarter. Nickles scored back-to-back buckets early, and Ainu'u remained active inside with a layup and a jump shot. Wells heated up late, draining two more 3-pointers to energize the bench. Ainu'u added another layup off a Pasquale assist, but the Spartans' depth secured the 102-65 victory.
