MBB: Bias Drops Career-High 25, but T-Wolves Fall In Hard-Fought Battle With Vikes

Box Score On Thursday night in Victoria, the UNBC Timberwolves battled to the final buzzer but ultimately fell 86-79 to the division leading UVic Vikes. Despite the loss, it was a career night for Isaiah Bias, who poured in a personal-best 25 points to go along with 5 assists, keeping the T-Wolves in contention until the very end. Renoldo Robinson matched that output for the Vikes, also finishing with 25 points.

The Timberwolves started slow, falling behind 8-3 early, but quickly found their footing. Justin Sunga hit a 3-pointer to get the offense going, and Danilo Gonzalez electrified the bench with a dunk off a Sunga assist. UNBC then went on a run, with Haukur Davidsson converting a three-point play and Bias scoring inside to give UNBC a 10-14 lead. Gonzalez added a 3-pointer, and Bias continued to attack, hitting a layup and a late 3-pointer to keep the T-Wolves within two, trailing 24-22 after one.

The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair. Tony Kibonge tied the game immediately with a steal and a layup. Sunga then took over briefly, hitting a jumper and a 3-pointer to put UNBC up 29-26. Chris Ainsley extended the lead with a triple, but UVic responded with dunks from Shadynn Smid.

Bias remained hot, hitting another 3-pointer and multiple jump shots to answer every Vikes run. A late jumper from Bias cut the halftime deficit to just 46-42.

In the third quarter, the Vikes tried to pull away, extending their lead behind perimeter shooting from Ethan Boag and Dylan Gage.

However, UNBC refused to fold. Miller Davies hit free throws, and Milan Pasquale drained a 3-pointer off a Bias assist. Haukur Davidsson added a layup, and Bias hit yet another triple. Ainsley closed the quarter with a jumper, but the T-Wolves trailed 67-59 heading into the fourth.

The Timberwolves mounted acomeback in the final frame. Kibonge and Bias scored early buckets, and a Davies jumper cut the UVic lead to just 68-66, forcing a Vikes timeout. UVic responded with a 6-0 run, but Kibonge answered with a massive "and-one" play. Ainsley also converted a three-point play late, and Davies scored on a put-back to keep hope alive. Kibonge hit a late 3-pointer to make it interesting, and Wesley Ainu'u added a bucket at the buzzer, but the Vikes held on for the victory.

The Timberwolves will look to bounce back on Saturday when they travel to face Trinity Western University.
