The UNBC Timberwolves Men proved to be the mightier pack once again, defeating the TRU Wolfpack 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium to complete the weekend sweep. With the win, the TWolves come out of the opening weekend of the Canada West season with a perfect 2-0-0 record. After a scoreless first half,
Isaac Tate and
Jamie Wildash-Chan scored early in the second frame to put the TWolves ahead.
Logan Pierce finished the game with seven saves while his counterpart Luca Ortu made five for TRU. The lone Wolfpack goal came way of Lachlan Will in the 59th minute.
Needing just one save to reach the milestone,
Logan Pierce made his 100th career Canada West save in the 6th minute.
With Sunday's game coming earlier in the day and temperatures being much warmer field level, both teams appeared to take a more reserved approach to their strategies in the early going of the game.
In the 32nd minute, a foul set the Wolfpack up for a straight-on kick a few yards outside of the 18-yard box. Pierce made a diving save to turn away the opportunity to keep the score at zeros.
Back the other way, in the 35th minute, Issac Tate aggressively worked the ball low into the box, putting a shot on net that was nearly redirected off the head of a Wolfpack defender for an own-goal, but instead soared just over the crossbar.
After 45 minutes, the game remained scoreless. TRU had the slight edge on shots - leading 4-3 in the stat department.
Coming out of halftime, the TWolves were quick to break the stalemate. in the 49th minute, a cross attempt found its way to the foot of
Isaac Tate, who didn't hesitate in tucking a quick kick inside the near post to put the TWolves ahead. The goal marked the third-year TWolves' first of the season, fourth of his Canada West career.
A few minutes later, the TWolves added to their lead. A rebound off a corner kick ricocheted it's way out to
Jamie Wildash-Chan, who put a 20-yard shot on net that dinged off the post, off the back of the goalie, and into the net for his second of the season.
In the 59th minute, the Wolfpack answered with one of their own to bite into the deficit. Lachlan Will was credited with the goal, his first of the season.
Following the Wolfpack goal, the TWolves dug their cleats in deep to maintain their one-goal lead, keeping the Wolfpack contained for the remaining time to put a lock on the 2-1 win.
UNBC improves their record to 2-0-0 following opening weekend of the Canada West Men's Soccer season.
Up next, the TWolves will travel to Langley to take on the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday (August 29) for their first weekend on the road this Canada West season. The game on Thursday is scheduled to kick off at 7:15 pm.
