MBB: TWolves Fall to Cascades in Friday Road Opener

Box Score Friday night in Abbotsford, the UNBC Timberwolves dropped an 60-89 decision to the host UFV Cascades. The Timberwolves took to the floor without the services of Canada West's leading scorer, Evgeny Baukin, who was sidelined with an upper-body injury.

In Baukin's absence, Miller Davies was a force on the glass for UNBC, hauling in a game-high 16 rebounds. Dario Lopez led the way for UFV with a 20-point performance.

Justin Sunga opened the scoring for UNBC with a jumper assisted by Davies, but the hosts responded with an early run to take a 14-4 lead. Davies stopped the bleeding with a dunk off an offensive rebound, sparking the T-Wolves' offense. Buckets from Danilo Gonzalez and Isaiah Bias, along with free throws from Haukur Davidsson and Tony Kibonge, helped UNBC claw back. A late jumper from Cairo Wells cut the deficit to 20-15 after ten minutes.

The Timberwolves kept chipping away in the second quarter.  Davidsson was active inside with back-to-back layups, and Kibonge connected from deep off a feed from Isaiah Bias to make it 35-26. While UFV got 3-pointers from Dilveer Randhawa and Lopez, UNBC refused to let the game get away. Wells provided a highlight-reel dunk off a Wesley Ainu'u offensive board, and Gonzalez beat the buzzer with a layup to pull UNBC within six, trailing just 43-37 at the break.

The third quarter proved to be the turning point. Davidsson opened the half with a layup, but the UFV offense exploded. Lopez and Randhawa connected from beyond the arc, fueling a run that saw the Cascades outscore UNBC significantly in the frame. Despite a late jumper from Wells, the T-Wolves found themselves down 72-45 heading into the fourth.

Despite the deficit, UNBC continued to battle. Milan Pasquale provided a spark off the bench, draining back-to-back 3-pointers, including a four-point play after being fouled on the second make. Bias continued to facilitate, setting up Pasquale and finding Ainu'u for scores inside.
The Timberwolves will look to bounce back when they face the Cascades again tomorrow night, November 22nd, at 6:00 PM.
