Saturday night in Kelowna, the UNBC Timberwolves (2-5) dropped a gut-wrenching 82-79 result to the UBC Okanagan Heat (3-5). After trailing by 15 going into the fourth, UBCO outscored UNBC 28-10 in the final period to secure the win. Mike Adarkwah-Nti hit three free-throws with eight seconds left in the game, pushing UBCO ahead by three points. He was one of three Heat players to finish with 20-or-more points. His 22 were complimented by 20 from Lamine Conde and 25 from Jalen Shirley. UNBC's offensive leader was
Evgeny Baukin who poured in 25, while
Isaiah Bias put forth his strongest offensive outing of the season with 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Threes from Bias and Kibonge, along with Sunga, Baukin and Bias layups pushed UNBC to a 12-0 lead out of the gate.
Milan Pasquale then got in on the act with a pair of triples and with three minutes remaining in the first, UNBC led 20-9. The early points leader for UBCO was Mike Adarkwah-Nti who nabbed five of his team's first nine. A late three from Baukin put an exclamation point on a 25-14 lead after one. Baukin led UNBC with seven first-quarter points while Adarkwah-Nti had a game-high eight.
UBCO went on a 7-3 run to start the second thanks to a three from Adarkwah-Nti, free-throws from Jalen Shirley and a jumper from Lamine Conde, but Kibonge and Baukin both answered with threes and UNBC led by nine with 6:30 still to go. Shirley hit two threes in the second for UBCO and did his part to keep his team within single digits. But
Haukur Davidsson nailed the ninth triple of the night for UNBC with just under a minute remaining, and the TWolves took a 51-37 lead into the halftime break.
Evgeny Baukin had 16 points in the first half to top all scorers while
Isaiah Bias added nine points, five assists and four rebounds. The duo of Shirley and Adarkwah-Nti both had 14 first-half points for UBCO.
Bias climbed into double-digits with an early third-quarter three, and it also gave UNBC their 10
th triple of the night, but Moore responded with a three for UBCO, pushing the gap back to 10. But try as they would, UBCO couldn't seem to make a bigger dent in UNBC's lead. A series of free-throws from Sunga (two) and
Danilo Gonzalez forced the TWolves back up by 15 (65-49). They'd ultimately take a 69-54 lead into the final quarter.
But the home crowd finally came alive in the fourth as an 18-1 run from UBCO put UBCO ahead. Moore, Shirley, Adarkwah-Nti and Conde each hit threes and Conde added a pair of layups. Baukin stopped UBCO's momentum with a layup and a single-free-throw making it a 74-73 game with 4:18 left. But Shirley hit a layup and Moore drained a triple, and UBCO led by six.
Haukur Davidsson answered with back-to-back layups and Bias drained two free-throws, tying the score at 79 which is where the score stayed until the final minute of the quarter.
The teams remained scoreless until there were eight seconds left.
Isaiah Bias fouled Adarkwah-Nti's three-point effort, sending him to the line. He made all of them putting the hosts up by three with one final possession looming for UNBC.
Despite connecting on 11 threes on the night, the final two attempts for UNBC from beyond the arc came up empty, and the Heat completed their comeback earning an 82-79 victory. The win completes a weekend and season sweep of the TWolves for UBCO.
Up next for UNBC – a trip South to Abbotsford to battle the UFV Cascades on Friday and Saturday.
