Box Score Saturday night in Regina, the UNBC Timberwolves (0-6) wrapped up their road weekend with a 100-72 loss to the Regina Cougars. Jamie White (29) and Ben Kamba (27) both had big nights offensively for the Cougars while
Evgeny Baukin matched a career high with 23 points in response for UNBC while
Justin Sunga added 18 and
Marcus Wilson posted 10 points on a perfect four-for-four from the field.
Baukin nailed back-to-back threes to start the game as UNBC opened up a 6-1 lead. The third-year Russian forward would end up securing 10 of UNBC's first 14 points.
Will Keyes supplied the other four early points for the TWolves who trailed by a slim 11-10 margin at the halfway point of the first. Jamie White was the early offensive catalyst for Regina as he potted seven of his team's first 15 points. Arinze Emeka-Anyakwo followed with two layups, Kamba followed with one, and Dakota McBride-Marean hit a three as part of a 10-0 Cougar run which put the hosts ahead 24-14. The run ended with Sunga's first points of the night for UNBC, which came in the dying seconds of the off three successful free-throws, but Regina led 24-17 after one.
Sunga began the second quarter by connecting on two more free-throws, and
Ben White followed with a pair of makes of his own from the charity stripe as the TWolves forced their way back within five (26-21). Kenyi answered with a three for Regina, and then back came both Keyes and White for UNBC as the score showed 30-25 for Regina after two minutes of the second. Over the next four minutes and change, the teams combined for only three field goals – all of which were from Regina as they managed to restore their double-digit lead at 37-25.
But UNBC answered with a 13-2 run. Baukin's fifth make of the half halted that run, and thanks to an 'And 1' play, his point total increased to 13. Sunga's sixth and seventh free-throws of the day got UNBC back within seven, and a
Marcus Wilson's layup followed to make it a five-point game again. A few possessions later, Wilson drilled a clutch three to pull within two, and the final bucket of the quarter from UNBC came from a Sunga buzzer-beating two. All told, the TWolves outscored Regina 23-17 in the second, and trailed 41-40 at half.
Through 20, Baukin (14) and Sunga (11) had combined for 25 points for Todd Jordan's squad while Emeka-Anyakwo (10), Jamie White (9) and Kenyi (8) collectively had 27 for Regina. Four different TWolves: Baukin, Sunga, Keyes and
Ben White had four rebounds apiece at half, while Jamie White led Regina with five.
The TWolves opened up the third on an 8-5 run to regain the lead. Baukin got things started with a pair of buckets - the first of which came as a result of a gritty rebound from Keyes on the offensive glass. Sunga added two free throws, and Wilson converted on an elbow jumper. Jamie White responded with two free-throws for Regina, tying the score at 48-48.
The teams continued to trade leads as
Chris Ainsley and Sunga rattled off threes for UNBC, but Kenyi answered with a triple of his own for Regina who led 61-56 with a two minutes remaining in the quarter. The push kept coming from the hosts, who did their part at both ends of the court, and ultimately, a 16-2 run down the stretch for the Cougars helped them reach a 70-56 lead at the end of the third.
Two successful UNBC free-throws from
Ben White and a layup from Regina's Kamba got the offense started in the fourth quarter, but neither team was able to generate anything else offensively through the opening two minutes and change. The next bucket came from Baukin, who arrived at the 20-point mark with an impressive Euro-step layup, but Jamie White responded with a three, and a layup getting him to 22 points and pushing Regina's lead to 19 points. The Cougars would go on to outscore UNBC 30-16 in the final quarter.
Despite the deficit, the TWolves were no short on fourth quarter positives.
Wilson's second three of the night, and fourth straight make from the field, pushed him to double-digits for the first time in his Canada West career, and
Evgeny Baukin ended up matching his previous career high in points with 23. He finished the night nine-of-18 to lead the team.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Regina Cougars were able to celebrate a 100-72 victory, giving them their third straight win.
The TWolves will now return home to battle the UBC Okanagan Heat in a pair of home games at Brownridge Court beginning Friday, November 22
nd at 8:00 pm.
