Box Score Saturday night at Chase Field in Langley, the UNBC Timberwolves battled to the bitter end but ultimately suffered a 1-0 defeat against the host TWU Spartans.
The drama peaked in the dying seconds of stoppage time. With TWU accumulating yellow cards under heavy UNBC pressure, the Timberwolves drew a foul inside the penalty area in the 95th minute to earn a penalty kick of their own. Mehdi Bounaaja stepped up to take the crucial shot, but Spartans goalkeeper Jakob Frank made a stunning save to his right, preserving the 1-0 victory for the Spartans.
Despite the result, Kosta Adzic earned Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors for his incredible work rate in the midfield, constantly disrupting the Spartans and creating chances for the T-Wolves.
The Timberwolves came out of the gate flying. In the opening minute, Luis Beck fired a dangerous shot on target, but TWU goalkeeper Jakob Frank was there to make the save. UNBC kept the pressure on, nearly capitalizing on a corner kick in the 10th minute. Defensively, the Timberwolves were equally dialed in. When the Spartans pushed back, UNBC goalkeeper Callum Cuthbert answered the call, making a spectacular diving save on a point-blank header from Xander Roxburgh in the 19th minute.
As the half progressed, the T-Wolves continued to threaten. Ryder Rusman was making a massive impact in his first weekend of action for UNBC tested Frank with a quality shot in the 28th minute and pushed the rebound just wide. Adzic commanded the midfield, maintaining UNBC's possession, while the T-Wolves caught a break in the 37th minute when TWU's Jordan Low rattled a shot off the crossbar. The half ended with UNBC clearing away back-to-back Spartans corners to keep the match scoreless.
The intensity ramped up in the second half. Adam Korduner tried to get the T-Wolves on the board early, but his strike was blocked by a TWU defender. Cuthbert continued his stellar play in the UNBC net, making another clutch save on Low in the 53rd minute. At the other end, Pipeijn van der Ende ripped a shot on goal at the hour mark, but Frank managed to keep it out.
On the defensive side, Charlie Beauvais was an absolute force inside the penalty box, throwing himself in front of TWU attackers to shut down passing lanes. However, in the 71st minute, the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick. Roxburgh stepped up and converted, giving TWU a 1-0 lead.
Refusing to quit, the Timberwolves threw everything they had at the Spartans down the stretch. Beauvais and van der Ende formed a wall on defense to prevent TWU from extending the lead, allowing the UNBC attackers to press for an equalizer. Hagon Kim narrowly missed a header off a corner kick in the 87th minute, and Simon Odenthal forced another crucial save from Frank moments later.
Then, with stoppage time winding down, Frank made his final heroic save off the Bounaaja penalty kick opportunity, cementing the victory for Trinity Western and pushing UNBC's record on the season to 0-3-3.
The Timberwolves will look to bounce back and secure a victory when they head to Alberta on Friday, September 25 to face the MacEwan Griffins.
