Box Score Friday afternoon at the Northern Sport Centre, the UNBC Timberwolves (1-18) fell 53-44 to the TRU WolfPack (7-12). Sydney Vollrath (14), Hailey Merrigan (11) and Morgan Eichenberger (10) all hit double-digits for the visitors while
Hazel Phillips countered with a team-high 15 for UNBC. Merrigan had a huge day on the glass for TRU. She set a new single-game program record with 20 rebounds - 16 of which came on the defensive glass.
The two sides were deadlocked after one quarter at 15–15.
UNBC came out with energy, led by rookie Phillips, who made an immediate impact with seven first-quarter points while adding two rebounds and a block.
Amrit Manak chipped in three points, while
Sophia Fuller and
Avin Jahangiri each added a pair. TRU countered with balanced scoring from SVollrath (5), Olivia Wheatley (4), and Olena Vasylenko (4) to keep pace through the first 10 minutes.
The WolfPack edged ahead in the second quarter, holding UNBC to nine points while finding their rhythm offensively. Fuller continued her strong start for the Timberwolves, knocking down her next two buckets to lead UNBC with eight points at halftime. TRU, however, got a spark from Eichenberger, who was perfect from the field at 4-for-4 in just four minutes of action, adding eight points and two rebounds off the bench. At the break, TRU carried a slim 27–24 advantage, with Eichenberger and Fuller sharing game-high scoring honors.
Aurora Cabrera was active on the glass for UNBC, leading all players with six first-half rebounds.
Coming out of halftime, UNBC inched closer by winning the third quarter 12–11.
Claire Huang led the Timberwolves with five points in the frame, while Cabrera added her first four points of the contest. TRU continued to rely on Vollrath, who buried her second three-pointer of the game to reach double figures, while Merrigan paced the WolfPack with five points in the quarter as TRU maintained a narrow edge heading into the final period.
The final 10 minutes though swung the momentum fully back into the favour of TRU. The WolfPack outscored UNBC 15-8 in the final 10. Vollrath and Kylee Koppes each supplied four points while Eichenberger snagged four fourth quarter rebounds. Seven of the final eight points on the day for UNBC came from Phillips who finished the day with 15.
