Box Score On Friday night in Kelowna, the UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer team put together a commanding, wire-to-wire performance, overpowering the host UBCO Heat in a 4-0 clean-sheet victory. Mehdi Bounaaja was a dynamo, recording two goals, his team-leading fourth assist, and six shots on target to earn Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honours. Kaiden Young and Ryder Rusman also struck in the first-half for UNBC who put up four goals for the first time since October 16, 2022 (also against UBCO).
The Timberwolves came out buzzing right from the opening whistle, suffocating UBCO with a relentless high press. James Jordan nearly opened the scoring in the third minute with a dangerous strike that sailed just high. After UNBC's backline stood tall to block an early Heat attempt, Pipeijn van der Ende forced a save out of UBCO goalkeeper Ronan Woodroffe in the 13th minute. At the other end, Callum Cuthbert came up with an immediate, sharp save on Gavin La Montagne before the UNBC backline thwarted another attempt off a header. Cuthbert finished the night with three saves on his way to his first clean sheet of the season.
UNBC's offensive breakthrough came in the 23rd minute. Bounaaja orchestrated the play with a pin-point cross into the box, connecting with Kaiden Young, who made no mistake and buried his team-leading fifth goal to put the Timberwolves up 1-0.
The Timberwolves never took their foot off the gas. Jordan and Bounaaja continued to test Woodroffe, and in the 35th minute, the pressure produced another milestone. Ryder Rusman charged up the left flank with blistering pace and unleashed a clinical strike past Woodroffe for his first career Canada West goal, doubling the Timberwolves' advantage to 2-0. Defensively, van der Ende, Luis Hirsch, and Kosta Adzic formed an impenetrable wall, stripping away possession and protecting Cuthbert to take a two-goal cushion into halftime.
The second half began just as the first ended, with the Timberwolves dominating territory. UNBC earned two corners right out of the break and nearly added a third when Bounaaja forced a goal-line clearance by UBCO's Ian Klumpen. Cuthbert stayed sharp to deny Mosi Klusman in the 52nd minute, but the spotlight stayed firmly on UNBC's attack.
In the 70th minute, the Timberwolves struck again with pure poetry. Hagon Kim started the counter by springing Young down the wing, and Young whipped a cross into the penalty box, where Bounaaja soared to head home a clinical finish, extending the lead to 3-0.
Bounaaja nearly added another moments later when a strike rattled off the crossbar, followed by rapid-fire shots on target from Young and Nick Couchman. In the 78th minute, UNBC's relentless pressure drew a foul in the penalty area. Bounaaja calmly stepped to the spot and tucked a penalty kick into the bottom-left corner to seal his second-half brace and make it 4-0.
Cuthbert closed out the night in style, denying Charlie Prefontaine in the 88th minute to preserve the well-deserved clean sheet.
The Timberwolves will look to keep their momentum rolling when they conclude their weekend road trip tomorrow, Saturday, October 10, traveling to Kamloops to take on the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
