MSOC: A Late Goal off the Bench from Nystedt Helps UNBC Earn a Point in a 1-1 Draw with MRU

Box Score On Sunday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium, the UNBC Timberwolves showcased their trademark resilience, battling the visiting Mount Royal University Cougars to a hard-fought 1-1 draw. Pipeijn van der Ende turned in a masterclass on the backline, playing the full 90 minutes and earning Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors for his immense defensive efforts.

The match began with a physical, grinding pace in the midfield as both teams fought for possession and committed early fouls. UNBC generated the first dangerous chance in the 15th minute when Adam Korduner tested MRU goalkeeper Sjard Strauss with a quality shot on target. The Timberwolves defense matched the intensity, with goalkeeper Callum Cuthbert dominating his penalty area and confidently snagging an MRU free kick out of the air in the 26th minute to eliminate the threat.

UNBC's attack started to find its rhythm near the half-hour mark. Kaiden Young forced another save from Strauss in the 30th minute, and Hagon Kim followed up seconds later with a shot that sailed just high. Luis Beck also sparked the offense with a surging run up the field. The T-Wolves kept the pressure pinned on the Cougars, earning back-to-back corners delivered by James Jordan in the 39th minute. MRU pushed back late in the half with a string of chances, but Cuthbert stood tall, making a crucial save on Joe Green. Kim nearly broke the deadlock right before the whistle with a shot on goal, but Strauss made the stop to send the teams into the break tied 0-0. Despite being outshot 7-4 in the opening half, the Timberwolves were far more efficient, directing three shots on target compared to just one for the Cougars.

The physical battle continued into the second half. After UNBC weathered a pair of early MRU corners, Cuthbert delivered the save of the match in the 63rd minute. MRU's Luka Patik unleashed a dangerous strike, but Cuthbert fully extended, diving to the top-right corner to rob the Cougars of a sure goal. The Timberwolves' defense continued to shine, highlighted by a spectacular block from Luis Hirsch to deny a shot from Skyler Rogers in the 69th minute.

However, the Cougars finally broke through in the 71st minute after being awarded a penalty kick. Patik stepped up to the spot and converted, giving MRU a 1-0 lead.

Facing a deficit, van der Ende put the team on his back defensively. In the 74th minute, he executed a flawless, game-saving slide tackle down the right wing to shut down a Cougars fast break. Inspired by the defensive stand, the T-Wolves surged forward. In the 81st minute, Mehdi Bounaaja delivered a gorgeous free kick into the box, and Koss Nystedt rose above the crowd to smash a powerful header past Strauss, tying the game at 1-1.

The Timberwolves pressed for a winner in the dying moments. After Cuthbert made one final clutch save on Jaxon Marchant in the 85th minute, Kim made a heroic run out of the defensive end right at the 90-minute mark to spark one last attack before being brought down by a foul. The tension reached its peak in stoppage time when MRU's Tim Beckedahl was issued a straight red card, reducing the Cougars to 10 men. Despite three minutes of added time and the late man advantage, neither side could find the decisive goal.

The Timberwolves will now head on the road, traveling to Kelowna to face the UBCO Heat on Friday, October 9. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:45 PM.
