Box Score Friday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium, the UNBC Timberwolves locked horns with the visiting Alberta Golden Bears in a thrilling, physical battle, ultimately playing to a 2-2 draw.
Kaiden Young delivered an electrifying two-point performance, factoring into both UNBC goals to earn Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honours in front of the home crowd.
The Timberwolves controlled the early tempo, establishing their possession game right from kickoff. UNBC goalkeeper
Owen Shum set the tone defensively in the fourth minute, aggressively reaching out to snatch a dangerous ball and deny an early Alberta chance. Young sparked the Timberwolves' attack shortly after, using his speed to carry the ball upfield and put the Golden Bears on their heels.
In the 13th minute, the pressure paid off. Young threaded a beautiful pass to
Luis Hirsch, who provided a clinical finish to put UNBC up 1-0.
Hagon Kim kept the momentum rolling, weaving through the midfield to generate further chances, but Alberta responded in the 20th minute. Shum made an excellent initial save on a shot from Thomas Hope, and followed it up with another crucial stop on a Justin George cross. However, the ball deflected right to Prince Amanda, who buried the rebound to level the match at 1-1.
Despite a yellow card to
Koss Nystedt shortly after, the Timberwolves regained the lead in spectacular fashion in the 29th minute. After receiving a feed from
Luis Beck, Young corralled the ball with an Alberta defender draped all over him. In a highlight-reel moment, Young turned and fired a blistering strike directly into the top right corner to make it 2-1 for UNBC. Defensively,
Pipeijn van der Ende was a wall, coming up with two massive blocks inside the penalty area, while Hirsch hustled back in the 44th minute to execute a flawless, clean slide tackle that shut down an Alberta shooting lane. Shum closed out the half with a sharp save on Nicholas Lechelt, preserving the 2-1 lead at the break.
The second half began as a defensive grind. UNBC locked down the box near the hour mark, constantly intercepting passes and clearing away danger. However, the Golden Bears managed to break through and find their equalizer in the 67th minute when Patrick Kondraciuk scored off an assist from Anson Minty.
With the game tied 2-2, Shum completely took over in the UNBC net. The Timberwolves keeper put on an absolute clinic down the stretch, making clutch, game-saving stops on Amanda in the 73rd minute, Minty just 20 seconds later, and another huge save in the 78th minute. Van der Ende continued his stellar defensive work in the box to help weather the storm.
The final moments featured a special milestone for the UNBC program, as Prince George local
Xavier Rocha subbed in to make his Timberwolves debut. The drama continued right into stoppage time, with Shum laying out for one final, spectacular diving save to preserve the hard-fought point. The intense physical battle boiled over at the final whistle, resulting in a pair of red cards, including one issued to UNBC's
Charlie Beauvais and one to Alberta's Justin George.
The Timberwolves will be back on the pitch at Masich Place Stadium this Sunday, October 4, when they host the Mount Royal Cougars. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
