Box Score On Friday night at Centennial Stadium in Victoria, the UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer team battled hard against a relentless Victoria Vikes attack but ultimately fell 3-0. Despite the challenging result, Koss Nystedt earned Mr. Mikes Player of the Game honors for the Timberwolves, putting in a gritty, full-90-minute defensive shift and making several crucial plays to disrupt the Vikes offense.
The Vikes established control early, immediately pressing high and generating a dangerous cross in the second minute that Jack Napier-Ganley headed just wide. Victoria continued to test the UNBC defense, but goalkeeper Callum Cuthbert was sharp, punching away a header from Alex Moody in the ninth minute and diving to rob Archie Tugwell in the 15th minute. The Timberwolves backline worked tirelessly to block attempts, but Victoria finally broke through in the 18th minute when Evan Larson scored off an assist from Napier-Ganley.
UNBC pushed back looking for an equalizer, transitioning the ball up the pitch to create chances. In the 33rd minute, Victoria's Connor Legge was issued a yellow card, giving the Timberwolves a prime free-kick opportunity just outside the penalty box. Mehdi Bounaaja stepped up and sent the ball in, which deflected to Adam Korduner, but his ensuing shot was blocked by a leaping Victoria defender. Defensively, Kosta Adzic was a steadying presence, turning away Vikes advances, while Nystedt delivered a massive clearance in the 41st minute sweeping a dangerous ball out of the penalty box at the very last second to keep the deficit at 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Timberwolves came out in the second half looking to level the score. A UNBC free kick in the 48th minute hit the Victoria wall, but the T-Wolves kept pressing. Luis Hirsch anchored the defense, shutting down passing lanes, while Korduner surged up the right wing to earn a corner kick in the 51st minute. Kaiden Young and Bounaaja both made threatening runs down the flanks but were turned away by the Victoria defense. Hirsch nearly found a breakthrough in the 57th minute, but his shot was blocked.
As UNBC committed numbers forward, the Vikes counter-attacked. Cuthbert kept the T-Wolves in the game with a spectacular sequence in the 70th minute, making back-to-back saves on Larson and Wesley Jones on a rapid-fire rebound. However, Jones finally beat Cuthbert in the 76th minute, finishing off a feed from Moody to extend the Victoria lead to 2-0.
Pipeijn van der Ende continued to battle in the UNBC penalty area, expertly breaking up passes, and Cuthbert made several more clutch saves down the stretch to keep the game within reach. Unfortunately, Jones found the back of the net again right at the 90-minute mark to cap the scoring at 3-0.
The Timberwolves will look to quickly reset as they wrap up their weekend road trip tomorrow night, Saturday, October 17, taking on the UBC Thunderbirds. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
