WBB: TWolves Drop Thursday Clash to UBC

Thursday night at the Northern Sport Centre the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the UBC Thunderbirds by a margin of 84-49.

UNBC got off to a confident start in the opening quarter, with Aurora Cabrera setting the tone by knocking down her first two field goals of the night. UBC responded quickly, converting three of their first four attempts. Sophia Fuller helped steady the Timberwolves, draining a three-pointer for her second basket of the quarter to tie the game at 9–9. Fuller led UNBC in scoring after one with five points. Summer Toor added a triple of her own to push the Timberwolves briefly in front, 14–11, but UBC closed the quarter strong. Late buckets from Sofia Bergman and Cassie Joli-Couer swung the lead back to the visitors, who carried a narrow 17–15 advantage into the second.

Fuller continued her strong play in the second quarter, adding five more points to give her a team-high 10 at the half. UNBC stayed within reach behind contributions from Viktoriia Filatova (four points) and Hazel Phillips (two points), but UBC began to create separation as the quarter wore on.

Joli-Couer delivered a dominant second quarter for the Thunderbirds, shooting an efficient 5-for-6 from the field and pouring in 12 first-half points, the most by any player. Jaeli Ibbetson controlled the glass for UBC with six rebounds, helping the 'Birds build a 38–26 lead at the break. Cabrera paced UNBC on the boards in the opening half, pulling down seven.

UBC seized more control coming out of the locker room, outscoring UNBC 22–14 in the third quarter to stretch their advantage to 60–40. Kiarra Kelly led the charge for the Thunderbirds, connecting on all three of her field-goal attempts in the frame, including a pair of three-pointers. Joli-Couer and Olivia Weekes provided added support with four points apiece as UBC continued to build momentum.

For the Timberwolves, Filatova was a bright spot in the third, scoring seven of UNBC's 14 points to lead the hosts with 11 through three. Cabrera remained active at both ends of the floor, adding four points and four rebounds in the period and sitting just two points shy of a double-double heading into the final 10 minutes.

Any hopes of a late UNBC push were quickly dashed in the fourth, as UBC opened the quarter on an 11–2 run, sparked by five points from Katie Hartman. The Thunderbirds never looked back, outscoring the Timberwolves 24–9 in the final 10 with seven different players finding the scoresheet.

UNBC's final nine points came from Summer Toor (3), Filatova (3), Amrit Manak (2), and Hazel Phillips (1), but the outcome was well in hand as UBC closed out an 84–49 victory.

The Timberwolves will look to bounce back in their next outing, returning home to face the UFV Cascades on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in what will be Shoot for the Cure Night at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre.
