The UNBC Timberwolves Men's Soccer team (3-6-2) battled hard but ultimately fell 2-1 to the visiting UFV Cascades (6-1-2) on Saturday afternoon.
The Cascades struck twice in the opening half, with Kevin Mailand burying a rebound in the 13th minute and reigning Canada West Player of the Year Mateo Brazinha adding his 10th of the season in the 36th.
UNBC goalkeeper Yanni Ntapas was busy early, turning aside seven shots on the day, including a highlight-reel sequence in the 30th minute that saw both Ntapas and defender Hagon Kim deny a sure goal at the line.
The Timberwolves responded in the second half, energized by a trio of substitutions. In the 70th minute, James Jordan pounced on a defensive miscue and hammered home his first of the season — and second career Canada West marker — to cut the deficit in half.
Despite pushing hard in the final stretch and a flurry of yellow cards adding to the intensity, the Timberwolves couldn't find an equalizer as UFV secured the weekend sweep with a 2-1 victory.
UNBC now heads into a bye week before returning to action October 11–12 in Kelowna against the UBC Okanagan Heat.
