Saturday night at the Northern Sport Centre the UNBC Timberwolves (1-10) put forth another solid effort on their home floor. Unfortunately their second-half comeback bid fell just short as they dropped a 67-62 decision to the Victoria Vikes (6-5). Mimi Sigue paced the visitors with 19 points and eight rebounds, while
Viktoriia Filatova led UNBC with a game-high 25 points along with six assists and four rebounds.
Avery Geddes (3) and
Viktoriia Filatova trade buckets to start the night for their respective teams. The Vikes followed with three makes, to take a 9-2 lead.
Sergey Shchepotkin's club answered with buckets in close from
Aurora Cabrera and Filatova, forcing a 12-6 score in favour of the Vikes with three minutes to go.
A late layup from Filatova, and an elbow triple from
Summer Toor kept the TWolves within striking distance, but the Royals led 17-11 after one. The top scorer for the Vikes in Quarter 1 was Geddes with six. Filatova had six in response for UNBC.
The VIkes began the second on a 5-0 run before
Mya Willing put UNBC on the board with a bucket in close. Willing came off the bench and drilled her first two shots and also tallied a pair of blocks during her second quarter minutes. Filatova continued her strong play offensively by adding seven more to her totals, giving her 13 in the first-half to lead all scorers. Victoria were full marks in the second though, outscoring UNBC 23-11 on their way to a 40-22 halftime lead. After notching five points in the first, Abigail Becker followed with four more in the second and had a team-high six rebounds in the opening half. Geddes and Becker both have nine points to lead the Vikes.
The TWolves put some energy back into the building thanks to a 23-14 run in the third.
Amrit Manak hit three times from deep, as did Filatova.
Sophia Fuller chimed in with three points to help push UNBC back within striking distance. The Vikes got four points in the third from Mimi Sigue, who led all Vikes in scoring through three quarters with 12 points. Filatova led all scorers though with 22, putting her four points shy of matching her previous career high for a single game.
A nine-point gap quickly turned into seven as Cabrera hit a layup on the opening possession of the fourth for UNBC. The first year forward from Spain had the first four points of the quarter for the TWolves.
Filatova continued to hit big buckets. Her fourth three of the night helped move UNBC within five, and then a three-point play from
Hazel Phillips made it a 62-60 lead for Victoria with 3:16 to go.
Sigue countered with a three-point play of her own, and Victoria led by two possessions with three minutes left.
Despite a valiant effort once again from the young, plucky Timberwolves squad, they couldn't quite close the gap, and Victoria left the NSC with a 67-62 victory.
