MBB: Gonzalez Sets New Career High In a Saturday Setback to Victoria.

Saturday night at the NSC, the UNBC Timberwolves wrapped up their weekend with a 98-71 setback at the hands of the Victoria Vikes.  Tyler Felt (19) and Shadynn Smid (15) combined for 36 points as the Vikes earned the weekend sweep. Danilo Gonzalez responded with a career-best 16 points for UNBC.

A high scoring first quarter saw the two sides combine for 54 points, but it was Victoria who led 31-23 after 10. The duo of Geoffrey James and Cameron Slaymaker each had seven for the Vikes. James added two assists, and two steals to round out a solid opening quarter.

Isaiah Bias paced the home side wit six points and Justin Sunga added five for the TWolves who started Milan Pasquale and Wesley Ainu'u for the first time this season. UNBC went seven-of-eight from the line in Period 1.

Victoria jumped out to a 12-3 run to start the second on the strength of 10 points from Shadynn Smid. Smid nailed two threes and also threw down a breakaway dunk. The first five points of the second for UNBC came off a triple and two free-throws from Pasquale. Danilo Gonzalez and Sunga would each add buckets in the back-half of the quarter, but the Vikes were full marks en route to a 25-14 scoring edge in the second. The score at half was 56-37.

Through 20, the Vikes were led offensively by James who had 13 points and five assists. Smid was next with 10 points, on only 10 first-half minutes played. UNBC's top offensive performer was Sunga with nine points and two assists while Gonzalez was next with seven.

The third quarter was much more even as Victoria played UNBC to a slim 25-20 edge. 11 of those. 25 for Victoria came from Ethan Boag who came alive in the third on three-of-six shooting while also going four-for-four from the stripe. Danilo Gonzalez showed well at the other end for UNBC by pouring in five, giving him a team-leading 12 points through the end of three. The score had Victoria up 81-57 after 30 minutes.

The final quarter played out to a 16-14 edge for the Vikes. Tyler Felt provided eight of the 16 for the Vikes, pushing him to a team-high 19. Wesley Ainu'u and Danilo Gonzalez each responded with four fourth quarter points for the Timberwolves. The final score on the night was a 98-71 win for the Vikes.

Up next for UNBC, a single road matchup Friday night next weekend at TRU. They'll then return to the NSC for their first home game on Friday, January 15th against UBC.
