MBB: Baukin Grabs 16 Points as TWolves Fall in Weekend Opener Against UFV

Friday afternoon at Brownridge Court, in front of an electric crowd full of kids from School District 57, the UNBC Timberwolves (1-14) kicked off their weekend with a 90-67 setback to the UFV Cascades (8-9). Dario Lopez paced the Cascades with a game-high 25 points and 12 rebounds while three other UFV players: Clay Kurtz (13), Ismael Hernandez (13) and Arpan Singh (14) reached double figures. For UNBC it was Evgeny Baukin who did the heavy lifting at both ends of the court, finishing with 16 points and seven boards. Chris Ainsley followed with 13 points and Josh Gillespie nabbed 10.

1st Quarter –
  • With the home crowd cheering their every move, the TWolves jumped out to a 17-15 edge in the opening quarter.
  • Baukin supplied nine points in the strength of three field goals and three foul shots, while Gillespie (4), Ainsley (2) and Isaiah Bias (2) also factored in offensively.
  • UNBC held Lopez to just one-of-three shooting in the opening quarter, but Kurtz went three-of-three on his way to six points.
2nd Quarter –
  • UFV caught fire in the second quarter and outscored the TWolves 28-12.
  • Hernandez piled on seven points while Jake Willemsen (6), Takeshi Croke (5), and Kurtz (5) helped pile on the points.
  • Five different Timberwolves nabbed points second, but none were able to secure more than a single field goal as UFV outrebounded UNBC 15-5.
  • The score at half showed 43-29 for UFV.
3rd Quarter –
  • Cascades leading scorer Dario Lopez went nuclear in the third quarter, posting 17 points in the period on eight-of-10 shooting. Lopez did a lot of damage from inside as just one of his eight field goals in the third came from beyond the three-point line.
  • The trio of Gillespie (6), Ainsley (5) and Baukin (5) did their part to keep UNBC in the game, contributing 16 of the TWolves eventual 22 third quarter points.
4th Quarter –
  • UFV outscored UNBC by a slim 18-16 margin in the fourth.
  • It was an especially memorable quarter for UFV's Arpan Singh who connected on all 14 of his points for the day in the final quarter. He shot four-for-five from deep.
  • The top offensive performance in the fourth for UNBC came from first-year big Wesley Ainu'u who clicked for eight points on three-of-five shooting. He also grabbed five rebounds in the final quarter alone.

Up next for the TWolves – a rematch with the Cascades tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm from Brownridge Court.
