WBB: Boykova's Double Double Powers UNBC To a Nine Point Home Victory Over UBCO

The UNBC Timberwolves are loving life at Brownridge Court! Friday night in Prince George, the UNBC Timberwolves Women (2-5) improved their record to 2-0 on their home court following a solid 64-55 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat. Viktoriia Filatova (18), Sveta Boykova (16) and Amrit Manak (15) all finished in double digits for UNBC and Boykova added a team-high 13 rebounds to complete the double-double. Tsuki Tsuzuki led the Heat with 12 points while Kelsey Falk snagged a game-high 14 rebounds for the Heat (3-4).

The first quarter was UBCO's best as they jumped out to a 22-8 lead. They began the night on an 11-2 run with Tsuki Tsuzuki netted six points while Kelsey Falk and Tennyson McCarthy teamed up for nine rebounds. Six of the eight first quarter points for UNBC came from Filatova. The UNBC leading scorer shot three-for-five from the field while Brynn Dergousoff and Manak each added single free-throws. Sveta Boykova was the leading rebounder for UNBC with four.

Sergey Shchepotkin's crew came out blazing in the second quarter, outscoring UBCO 15-0. All told, UNBC outscored UBCO 22-6 due in large part to nine points from Amrit Manak, eight points from Boykova and five from Filatova. Manak's second three of the night helped extend the TWolves run to 15-0 and gave them a 23-22 lead. Lily Pink ended the 15-0 run for UNBC with a layup and the other four points of the quarter for the visitors came from Kelsey Falk (a jumper and two free-throws).

At the half, UNBC led 30-28 with Filatova leading all scorers in the game with 11 points. Boykova was up to her usual antics on the glass, leading all TWolves with eight rebounds. For UBCO Falk and Tsuzuki shared the lead in points with six while Falk matched a game-high eight rebounds.

The TWolves came out swinging in the third, and outscored UBCO by a 20-13 clip. UNBC was especially effective from outside, going four-for-five in the quarter. Manak dropped two more threes while Sophia Fuller and Adaiah Tupas-Singh also hit from deep. Lily Pink resonded with five for UBCO while Tsuzuki had four. Through 30 minutes UNBC led 50-41.

In the fourth quarter each team registered 14 points apiece, but that was perfectly fine for the Green and Gold. Filatova piled on six more while Boykova added four for UNBC, while Manak grabbed three boards. Lauren Foullong and Stef Hart each had threes for the Heat in response, but when all was said and done, the TWolves had earned the 64-55 victory, improving their home record at Brownridge Court to 2-0 in the process.

With her double-double performance (16 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists), Sveta Boykova was named the Mr. Mike's Player of the Game for UNBC.

The Heat and TWolves won't have to wait long for a rematch as the two sides will meet again on Saturday night at 5:00 pm.
