Friday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium in front of hundreds of screaming School District 57 students – the UNBC Timberwolves dropped a 4-0 decision to the visiting Victoria Vikes. Sophie Murphy, Brianne McLeish and Tess Vande Vegte all notched a goal and an assist for Victoria. UNBC goalkeeper
Brityn Hinsche added 14 saves to her now conference-leading totals.
The energy in the stadium was palpable from the jump as the local students brought a noise and an intensity that both teams seemed to feed off.
In the 18
th minute, Victoria opened in transition off a failed zone clear. Ruby Nicholas got into the penalty area, and did well to chip a pass through the TWolves defender to the waiting Sophie Murphy. Murphy didn't have much space between the ball and Hinsche, found just the right angle to tuck home her first of the season.
The Vikes continued to push the pace in the UNBC zone and had a promising looking rush up the pitch in the 24
th minute, but
Maresha Manulak did well to race back and prevent a crossing pass that could have led to a high-danger chance.
The Vikes lead increased to 2-0 in the 27
th minute when Tess Vande Vegte snuck in close and placed a perfect header past the goal line after a solid crossing pass from Brianne McLeish that came from the right-wing. For Vande Vegte it marked her first of the campaign.
McLeish and Vande Vegte weren't done. They combined on the third Victoria goal of the half in the 43
rd minute, only this time it was McLeish finishing off a pass from Vande Vegte when she raced in alone on Hinsche and placed a low shot past her stretched left foot and in.
A major positive in the first-half for UNBC was fourth-year forward
Camryn Cline who not only did well to contribute defensively – but made swift, smart decisions with the ball and was postioned well throughout her entire duration on the field. For her efforts Friday she was named Mr. Mike's Player of the Game.
Shots on target at half were 8-2 favouring Victoria.
For a majority of the second half, Neil Sedgwick's club did well to keep the Vikes at bay.
Kate Rattee,
Abigayle Bradley,
Grace Barrett,
Sarah Lepine and
Fia Cameron all entered the match and brought positive energy into the equation and the chorus of cheers from the hundreds of School District 57 students only helped that cause.
The final goal of the afternoon came in the 87
th minute off the foot of Malia Phelan who took a feed from Sophie Murphy and fired a laser over Hinsche's left shoulder and in for her first goal of the season.
After 90-plus minutes had elapsed, the score read 4-0 for the visitors while shots on target read 18-4 for the Vikes who are now 6-1-3. The TWolves record now sits at 1-8-0 with a Sunday noon home clash with the MRU Cougars looming later this weekend.
*Note - Friday's home game marked the 60th game in the five-year U SPORTS career of UNBC Timberwolves forward Claire Turner. She becomes just the seventh Timberwolf to appear in 60-plus Canada West games for the Women's Soccer program.
