Prince George, B.C. – Friday night at the Northern Sport Centre, the UNBC Timberwolves men's basketball program (5-4) dropped a narrow 87-85 decision to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (1-10). Lethbridge forward Jack-Henry Fox-Grey hit the go-ahead shot from the elbow with just under a second remaining to give the visitors their final lead of the night. With 0.8 seconds left on the clock, UNBC came within inches of tying the game off a spectacular in-bound pass alley-oop attempt – But the ball hit the outside of the rim and Lethbridge held on to earn their first win of the season.
Spencer Ledoux led the home side with 26 points while
Josh Gillespie chimed in with 11 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Fox-Grey led all Pronghorns with 21 points on eight-of-13 shooting while Brady Baines hit six threes and notched 20 points.
Todd Jordan's club jumped out to a 28-21 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
Darren Hunter bagged nine of his eventual 18 points in the opening frame and was aided by a six-point, three-for-three effort from
Spencer Ledoux. Jack-Henry Fox-Grey did the heavy lifting in the opening period for Lethbridge with eight points on three-of-six shooting.
The visitors outscored UNBC 24-15 in the second quarter on the strength of a trio of threes from Brady Baines. The Pronghorns shot nine-for-14 (64.3 percent) in the second quarter and arrived at the half-time mark with a 45-43 lead over UNBC. Five of UNBC's 15 points in the second quarter came from Ledoux while
Chris Ross added a triple.
Brady Baines drilled two more threes in the third quarter as Lethbridge opened up a 10-point cushion at one point, before
Justin Sunga got hot. 10 of Sunga's 18 points came in the third quarter, and with the score at 71-61 favouring Lethbridge, his triple helped turn the tide back into UNBC's favour. Sunga shot three-for-six in the third quarter and would later add another three-pointer. Through 30 minutes, Lethbridge held a slim 66-65 edge.
Back-to-back buckets from Brady Baines in the early moments of the fourth quarter helped Lethbridge regain a six-point lead at 73-67, but a seven-point final quarter from
Spencer Ledoux ensured that the hosts stayed within striking distance. With just over two minutes left in the game though, Ledoux fouled out, which put even an even bigger onus on some of the younger players – And they were ready to deliver.
Darren Hunter hit a huge three-pointer to move UNBC back to an 84-82 deficit. Their next trip down the floor, Lethbridge converted on one of two three-throws giving them an 85-82 lead, setting the stage for a heroic 'And 1' effort from
Josh Gillespie.
After grabbing his own rebound with 48 seconds left, Gillespie charged hard to the rim, and converted in close, amongst traffic to make it a one-point game. He'd hit the free-throw to tie the score.
With about 10 seconds left, Lethbridge grabbed a rebound and raced down the floor. Kymani Pollard, the second-leading scorer in Canada West found an open Jack-Henry Fox-Grey at the UNBC elbow, and he converted, giving Lethbridge their two-point lead back.
With 0.8 seconds left, Todd Jordan called a timeout, and scripted an in-bound alley-oop play that came oh so close to working. Unfortunately
Josh Gillespie's leaping attempt found too much rim, and the Pronghorns were able to celebrate their first victory in 11 tries this season.
The Pronghorns finished the night with a field-goal percentage of 54.1% and were 11/25 from beyond the arc. UNBC shot 46 percent and were eight-for-20 from three.
Josh Gillespie's double-double effort earned him Mr. Mike's Player of the Game honours for UNBC who will now turn their sights to the looming rematch with Lethbridge which will go tomorrow night at 7:00 pm from the NSC.
