WBB: Landry, TWolves Drop the Back-Half of a Road Clash with Regina

Regina, SK – Saturday evening in Regina, SK the UNBC Timberwolvers (2-10) dropped the back-half of their weekend double-header against the Regina Cougars (8-4). Jade Belmore, the top scorer in Canada West led the attack for the hosts with 21 points (8/14 FG) while Dayna Pearce (3) and Maddy Seida (2) combined for five triples. Rebecca Landry responded with a team-high 16 points for UNBC while Bella Mesquita and Amrit Manak each hit a pair of threes. Sveta Boykova grabbed 10 rebounds in a losing cause for the TWolves who finished the night at a 37.7 percent shooting percentage (20/53). Regina answered with a 45.5 percent effort from the field on 30-of-66 shooting.

Veteran guard/forward Rebecca Landry hit two early buckets for UNBC and finished the first quarter a perfect three-for-three from the field. Her second make was a two-point jumper that gave UNBC an early 7-6 advantage. But Regina responded with a 17-0 run. Nine points came from Jade Belmore while Dayna Pearce and Maddy Seida each hit triples. Seven different Cougars found the scoresheet in the opening eight minutes before a layup and one successful three-throw from Viktoriia Filatova ended the run and put UNBC up to 10 points. Rebecca Landry, Adaiah Tupas-Singh and Halle Tiessen each added late baskets for UNBC which helped bridge the gap to an eventual 28-16 Regina lead through one. Rebecca Landry was the top scorer for UNBC with six points while Belmore topped all Cougars with nine.

Bella Mesquita got the UNBC offense started in the second quarter with a three pointer which moved the visitors within 11 points. But two buckets from Jade Belmore, free-throws from Cara Misskey and a layup from Ryen Schutz pushed the Regina lead back to 19 points. Adaiah Tupas-Singh halted the Cougars 8-3 run with a layup, and Rebecca Landry followed up with back-to-back makes giving her 10 on the night, adding to what would ultimately be a 7-0 run of offense for Sergey Shchepotkin's club. Ryen Schutz and Jade Belmore responded with late buckets for the hosts before Amrit Manak hit two free-throws. The two sides went into the tunnel with the score reading 42-28 for Regina. Halfway through the game Regina held a 22-11 edge in rebounds and 28 of their 42 first-half points came from inside the paint. UNBC did have 10 steals in the opening 20 minutes – three of which came from Adaiah Tupas-Singh.

Rebecca Landry once again found some early pay-dirt for UNBC. She hit her first two shots of the third quarter giving her seven successful field goals in her first nine attempts and UNBC rushed out to a 6-4 run. Halfway into the third quarter, Jade Belmore hit two free-throws allowing her to reach the 19-point mark (7/11 FG). A night previous, the top scorer in Canada West had 16 points. After a quiet first-half, Sveta Boykova hit back-to-back shots for UNBC, giving her five points for the night. But her squad was unable to inch their way closer as Cara Misskey responded with a layup and Kiana Wiens drilled a late three to give the Cougars a 21-point advantage (59-38). Regina outscored UNBC 17-10 in the third quarter.

Amrit Manak opened the scoring for the TWolves in the fourth. The second-year Toronto product drained a three which came off a Jade Belmore turnover. But Belmore answered with a jumper moments later, pushing her to 21 points, marking the seventh time she's surpassed the 20-point mark in a game in 2023-24. With Regina leading by 22, the TWolves mounted an 8-0 push of their own thanks to another layup from Rebecca Landry, a trey from Bella Mesquita and five unanswered points from Amrit Manak (a three, and two free-throws). That's as close as UNBC would get though as Regina answered with an 8-0 run, and when the final horn sounded the score showed 73-51 for the Cougars who had all 11 players on their roster record at least two points on the night.

Offensively, the TWolves were led by Rebecca Landry whose 16 points on eight-of-13 shooting were a team-high. That effort resulted in Landry receiving the Earls Road Warrior of the Game honour for the TWolves on Saturday. Also reaching double digits offensively was Amrit Manak who finished with 12 points. Defensively Sveta Boykova pulled down 10 rebounds while Bella Mesquita and Adaiah Tupas-Singh both secured three steals.

The TWolves will now return West for a Friday-Saturday home double-header against the UBC Thunderbirds beginning at Noon on Friday, January 19th at the Northern Sport Centre.
