WSOC: TWolves push first-placed Griffins for 90 minutes, fall 1-0 in thriller

The UNBC Timberwolves can hold their heads high after an impressive showing against one of the elite programs in Canada West. Sunday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium in Prince George, the UNBC Timberwolves (0-7-1) dropped a slim 1-0 decision at the hands of the Prairie Conference leading MacEwan Griffins (7-1-1). A penalty kick goal from Hannah Supina in the 71st minute was the difference as the visiting Griffins escaped Sunday with three points against a hungry UNBC squad that took them to the limit in all areas of the pitch.

It was a memorable first half on both sides of the ball for the TWolves. Neil Sedgwick's crew came out strong, generating three corner kicks within the first 12 minutes. On the other side, UNBC did a fine job to neutralize the potent attack of the Griffins. Third-year defender Kalista Kirkness showed some poise and leadership in the early moments, and the rest of her team fed off that energy.

The best GMU chance came in the 21st minute off a corner kick where the ball wound up in the goal mouth area on the right foot of Abbey Wright. Wright's blast was cleverly blocked by Camryn Cline. Maleah Fernie then produced another timely block in the 24th minute as the Griffins had tilted the field in their favour.

Back came the Timberwolves who generated a marvelous opportunity for themselves in the 44th minute on a free kick from two feet outside of the penalty area. Claire Turner got all of her attempt but the high blast from the fourth-year student from Fort St. John smacked off the crossbar and stayed out.

The shots at half were 11-5 for MacEwan with UNBC holding a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

The patience continued for UNBC in the second half which resulted in a good look in the 57th minute. Fia Cameron won a race down the left side for a through ball and placed a low shot on the GMU goal that Sabrina Alexander turned aside.

The Griffins nearly found the scoresheet in the 64th minute when Amelia Russo found an opening in close. But Brityn Hinsche delivered a timely save to keep things scoreless.

Six minutes later, Russo again forced a good clean look on the UNBC goal, but Hinsche stood tall and made another quality stop.

Persistence paid off for MacEwan in the 71st minute in the form of a penalty kick goal from Hannah Supina. Supina's waist-high blast just snuck past the fingertips of a diving Hinsche for her second of the season.

The experienced Griffins then kept the ball on the UNBC side of midfield for a majority of the remaining moments. Once again the effort and intent for the TWolves was exactly where it needed to be. Unfortunately, the only thing that evaded them Sunday was a result.

The final shot totals were 21-8 in favour of MacEwan.

For her efforts on the defensive side of the ball, Kalista Kirkness was named the Mr. Mike's Player of the Game for UNBC.

Next weekend the TWolves return to action on the road with a Friday showdown against the UVIC Vikes. The next home appearance for the UNBC women takes place on Friday, October 13th against UBCO.
