MSOC: Timberwolves outshoot, out-chance Spartans, but fall 3-0 to TWU

Eventually, the offensive floodgates will burst for the UNBC Timberwolves. Just not today. Despite out-possessing, outshooting, and out chancing the Trinity Western Spartans, the TWolves failed to hit the scoresheet, falling 3-0 to the Spartans on Saturday, September 2, 2023 in Langley, BC.

The Timberwolves came out with an early grip on momentum, earning a number of threatening chances and corner kicks in the opening minutes. Rookies Isaac Tate and Anton Zadonsky had the best chances, but Yeshua Silwamba did well to deny the opportunities. UNBC had three shots and three corners in the first seven minutes of the match.

UNBC continued to control the play, hemming Trinity into their half and continually creating chances around Silwamba. Freshman James Jordan was strong in the midfield, turning strong defending into chances at the other end, but the score remained scoreless.

Trinity would test Timberwolves keeper Daniel Zadravec, as CJ Rossi would get a pair of marginal chances, but the Victoria product kept the sheet clean.

Despite UNBC holding the advantage in shots, corners, and scoring opportunities, it was the Sparts who struck first in the 36th minute, when Rossi found a loose ball of a bouncing corner kick and tapped it past a helpless Zadravec, making it 1-0.

The Timberwolves looked to push back, possessing much of the rest of the half, but disaster struck in the 45th minute. A looping ball was sent into the UNBC box and Zadravec hesitated for just a moment, allowing Thomas Powell to chip it over the top and into the open net.

Despite an 8-4 advantage in shots and a 5-3 advantage on corners, Steve Simonson's side found itself down 2-0 after 45 minutes.

In the 58th minute, Julian Daduica caused a turnover and fed a streaking Koss Nystedt on the break. The first-year from Victoria beat Silwamba but had his look roll just wide of the far post, as the scoring woes continued.

The two sides traded mild chances for much of the remainder of the half, until a Charles Nana penalty kick made it 3-0 for TWU in the added time, sealing the game for the home Spartans.

With the victory, Trinity improves to 3-0-1, while UNBC drops to 0-3-1 on the campaign.

UNBC held an 18-9 advantage in shots, and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.

First-year Koss Nystedt was named Earls Road Warrior of the Game for his tremendous performance.
